The beach is great, but crowded. The guys who work in the watersports area are friendly, helpful, and informative.
The worst part, by far, was the dark, dank room. Not only was it tiny, dirty, and loud with early 90s decor, but the ceiling in the bathroom was falling in. I asked the front desk if they could move us to another comparable room or we would even pay more to be upgraded to a nicer room. The woman, rudely, said she'd send someone to look at the ceiling. The man came and said, in fact, the ceiling is falling in and needs to be fixed. He couldn't do it, but said he would sent someone to do it. They never came. The shower drain got clogged with ceiling chunks and didn't drain properly. It was disgusting.
The entertainment was awful and the food sucked.
Go somewhere else

This was a holiday gathering for us, two sons, their wives and our grandsons to be born in March and April. We enjoyed memories to be recounted for years to come.

The villa presents an awesome view of Petit Piton and the valley below spilling out to the Caribbean. Whether morning or midday sun, rainbows arching across the peak or colorful sunsets, the views are addictive, begging for many pictures in attempts to capture that which is best only when standing there. Perhaps the most picturesque and unique "signature" views in the Caribbean. Enjoy.

Villa accommodations are excellent, relaxing, open, private, and frame views at every turn. We had strong winds, heavy rain, peeper frogs, bats, birds, lizards, roosters, barking dogs, and a few insects. These were all accepted as a part of the experience. No complaints. Nothing that interrupted our enjoying a pleasant holiday with family.

Food: We cooked our own meals. Kitchen/living room great for family cooking/being together. Super J's in Vieux Fort had most all we needed and Eroline's in Souffriere had ample supplies. No seafood. We went out for some meals. Restaurants: Ladera, Hummingbird, Fond Doux, Mango Tree, Jalousie, and Anse Chastenet. Ladera was best. Hummingbird very good. The others mediocre. We have written separate reviews for each.

Sites: Botanical gardens, Hot Springs and Fond Doux Plantation are all worth a visit. Otherwise, drive and explore. Roads are good. Expect them to be hilly and winding. Only poor road we met was to Anse Chastenet. {"A bit of hell to get to paradise.")

Beaches: Jalousie is white sand and perfect. Anse Chastenet is black "sand" and serene. Bring chairs supplied by villa.

Our sons are avid SCUBA divers. Scuba St. Lucia is excellent dive shop.

The villa does not have working Internet but free WiFi from Jalousie can be reached from the villa porch.

Fabrice and Shaka were there when needed.

Best vacation ever! Be Happy!

My husband and I went to PR with our 6 year old son in Dec 08. We were there to bury a loved one... The trip was sudden, We called the HJ and was not able to get the amount of nights we needed.. We try booking another hotel, after check in we were so dissapointed with this other hotel is was not clean and not a good place to stay, right from the hotel I called Howard Johnnson and was able to get the nights I needed. I was so happy once we arrived at HJ it was so clean the staff made the trip so pleaseant. The hotel is located in a great place, right at the center of Mayaguez next to the Plaza it was beautiful. Some have complained about the noise level from an outside street, every time the car passes you hear the water drain cover.. if you ahead of time ask them to locate you in a room far from this...they will be more than happy to do so.. I had read a review alike, so when I arrived I laughed...and told my husband... I knew about that water drain cover sound before I got here...LOL to me it wasn't bad... the other thing you may hear is the bell from the near by church I thought this added an ambiance to the hold stay... It was a great stay! The pool was clean the hotel was clean.. The free breakfast was a plus and the great authentic Puerto Rican food was excellent and they give you from 6 to 10am to go, it is right across the street, it was great A+... The parking was good it was free you have to walk up the street for it but no big deal not far... they have someone there watching the cars..A+ If you go to the 5th floor you can have a view of the city.. A+ If you are a member of AAA you get a discount! A+++++ Thank you Howard Johnnson that in the midst of a grieving time you made our time pleasant! We were not happy with the room provided to us. The room (bathroom) was dirty. The pictures advertised on website are very deceiving & are a total misrepresentation. Definitely not a 5*.

A male staff member entered our lockedroom w/o knocking. I had gotten out of shower. Aside from being totally mortified, I quickly covered. The guy said there was leak coming from faucet.

Front desk called saying she had to move us. Her attitude toward us was unacceptable. The way that she handled the situation was totally unprofessional, since she told me to go over to the Atlantis Hotel. This is not how a 5 star resort should be run or how guests should be treated.

Staff told us its not their fault but it was our travel agents fault for not informing us about their poor conditions.
The 2nd room had brown stains on the sheets & dirty room. We called down numerous times for someone to come up to change our sheets. No one ever showed up.

I have never been so disgusted, not only with the unprofessional service and attitude, but with the unsatisfactory condition of the hotel and the dirty room(s) that were provided. For the expensive rate we paid for our trip, I was 100% dissatisfied and could not wait to return home after our 2nd night.

The hotel should not advertise the hotel as a 5 star when; in fact, it does not provide the services and accommodations of a 5 star.

This property definitely does not deserve a 5 star rating based upon my previous vacations and experiences while on holiday where the resorts were immaculately maintained and the staff went above and beyond to ensure that their guests thoroughly enjoyed their stay.

After speaking with numerous guests staying at our hotel, I found they shared the same concerns and were very unhappy/disgusted as we were. The Riu Paradise has a long way to go in terms of customer service.
