I have stayed here for six years in a row. The service, cleanliness, store, and restaurant have diminished in quality - despite their new promise to upgrade.
In fact, we found the quality so far gone that for virtually the same dollars, we have rented a house on Ambergris Cay for '09. Hot showers, kitchen, AC, all that jazz for only $1500.
At Cinnamon Bay, the staff was slow, the prices in the store were outlandish, and the restaurant ran out of food or missed our order. The salad bar was a joke.
Also, the bathrooms are getting cleaned less frequently. Sometimes raw sewage would run out of the manholes for days. Utensils were missing from the cabin, the gas grill wouldn't work, and the charcoal grill was falling over. Come on guys, for $120 a night - at least keep stuff working!
Cinnamon Bay is managed by a private company. Too bad, my parents did better with their campground for 30 years. I love St. John and the USVI, but Belize, here I come. I will miss the donkeys and deer. |

It is beautiful, but is for those who can "rough it". Visited: May 2005 |

We stayed in the cabins on Cinnamon. They were pretty bare - cement floors and basic mattresses and box springs. This was a "no frills" place, barely better than the tent sites. In fact, we checked out the tents and these seemed almost as cozy.
We had dishes, a gas grill (none too clean) and electricity. We had a wall fan (really needed it as it was hot and humid). Be prepared for lots of lizards, bugs, and land crabs in big holes (they are too shy and only really come out at night). Towards evening the "no seeums" will be out in force on the beach and they do bite.
The beach was beautiful, and snorkeling around the cay was fantastic. We saw sea turtles, a baracuda and very large tarpon (as well as many other fish, gorgeous corals and anemones).
It was truly paradise, but if you need hot showers and are fussy about your toilet, then this isn't for you. The showers were cold. There were flush toilets. But they sure lacked power, so sometimes they might be out of commission (but not for long).
There was a great little store and a restaurant, but you will pay big time. You would be better off getting some supplies at Cruz Bay (especially beer) than to buy it at Cinnamon.
I highly recommend Cinnamon Bay campgrounds for hearty people who don't mind roughing it. |

Great but slipping a bit... Visited: May 2003 |

Great place to stay. But Cinnamon Bay Campground has slipped a bit between my most recent visit and a previous visit. There are plans to do some upgrades and restoration. Please be advised that if you plan to book time at the CBC, ask if a St. Thomas Church Youth Group will be there at the same time [sorry, but I do not know the name of the group...but if your visit coincides with their stay, you'll be sorry...they are an unruly, out of control group of kids lacking any self discipline, NO apparent supervision and NO enforcement by the CBC management to see that the group abides by campground rules. In talking to others during my most recent visit, 30 April to 9 May, this group has a track record of raising hell in a most unpleasant way, that is, unless mayhem is your idea of tranquility? So check before you book!] |

This is neat and clean if you like a camping-like style. They have a great beach.
The food is not so great, and the cold showers after a few days get old. We would most definitely come back again soon, though. |

We have stayed at Cinnamon Bay for many years and have never been disappointed. It is definitely a "nature" experience, not for those seeking extravagance. It is never crowded, the beach is beautiful, and it is safe. |

I have stayed at Cinnamon many times in all three types of accommodations: bare site, platform tent, and bungalow.
Cinnamon Bay is gorgeous, safe, and relatively clean. They provide good snorkeling, great nearby hiking, and one of the best beaches on the island, although there are many great ones.
It's a great place for a family, since kids can roam the park on their own with no worries. |

Ever since I was 14, I have been coming to Cinnamon Bay Campground. It is like coming to a place out of this world without buildings or street sounds. It is a truly peaceful place. |

When I return to St. John, I will definitely return to this place. No, it's not extravagant in any way. You are on the beach, though, and you hear the waves crashing at night from your cottage.
The cottages are screened, so you feel the breeze at night. They do provide ice chests in the room to keep perishable items if you decide to buy groceries at their onsite grocery. There is a gas grill at every cottage.
The food at the restaurant wasn't real good, but who cares about food when you're in a place like this. Bathrooms with cold showers were near the cottages. Wild donkeys roamed the campground freely. There was equipment to rent such as kayaks, windsurfers, etc.
It was a pretty quiet place. It was very inexpensive and a really great place to stay. I will definitely be returning. |

I have been camping at Cinnamon Bay for over 20 years, and I always go back. The off season crowd has been thinning out as prices go up, and the service last fall had really gone down hill.
If you go durring the high season, I expect they will be geared up. It is a beautiful and magical spot. |

We had reservations for 5 nights. My husband is not a camper but I coerced him into giving it a try. We would both have separate reviews, as we experienced it from different directions. We were minimally prepared, as I knew most camping equipment would be supplied. It was. It’s important to bring as much food as possible, as prices are outrageous on St. John and St. Thomas.
The campground was clean, safe and beautiful. The showers were great. There was a fabulous, family environment where the kids would run to one another’s campsites to meet up for some activity. The beach was the most beautiful ever imaginable.
My husband was bored. He needs to be entertained and very active. He also didn't like having to find the bathroom in the dark. My only complaints were the noseeums (little biting bugs) and we had noisy neighbors one night. Other than that, it was stellar! I would recommend this vacation to anyone who knows that camping is not like staying at the Four Seasons Hotel.

We stayed at Cinnamon Bay for 2 weeks in March 1999. We got a bare site and brought our own tent and camping gear. Our spot was perfect--just a few yards from the best beach in the USVI if not the entire Carribean and just far enough from the bathrooms (which are very clean by the way and you get used to the cold water showers very quickly) so you don't hear everybody but close enough to go during the middle of the night.
This is by no means Caneel Bay, but it has everything you need if you are looking for a relaxing laid back vacation! We can't wait to go back. If you need anymore info, just email me! |

Private, Quiet and Beautiful Visited: November 1999 |

Assigning a star rating to this property is difficult, it has beautiful beaches, great snorkeling, a lovely resturant- but it IS a campground. It doesn't try to compare or compete with the mega-hotel resorts. If you are looking for a laid back, unpretentious, relaxing vacation in the Virgin Islands, this could be it. As a bonus, it could be the least expensive place to stay in all the Caribbean.
The accommodations range from bare sites (bring your own tent and sleeping bag) to erected tents (large tents with cots inside) to one room cottages (table, chairs, and two twin beds). No matter which you choose, you still have to walk down a path to the toilets and showers. Bring a flashlight, you'll need it for those trips to the bathroom at night.
There is a beautiful reef just off the beach. You can rent snorkel gear, as well as other water sports gear right at Cinnamon Bay's beach. The bay itself couldn't be prettier. Even with no swimming pool on the grounds, the beach is never crowded. Bring a good book, a beach towel and find a shady spot under a palm tree. The only sounds you'll hear are quiet waves and gentle breezes through the trees.
Meals are available on the property, just a short walk from the cabins/tents. The food is light and good, but not gourmet. This is a great place where tourists can enjoy the sun/sea/sand without impacting greatly on the environment. There is a feeling of peacefulness and tranquility here that I have never found at any other place, no matter how expensive. |
