We enjoyed our holiday at the Beach House. Visited: January 2008

What else could we have asked for?

We stayed at Palm corner part of a large house. It was made up of two one-bedroom studio flats on the ground floor, and a large one-bedroom flat on the second.

Situated in little bay Castara, we could just step right out onto the beach. We spent many nights just sitting on our veranda watching the sunset while sipping a rum or a cold beer. We slept to the sound of the waves, and woke up to the call of the birds; such a variety just flying onto your balcony or through the flat. At night we could feed the bats.

We could swim to Big Bay or stick on snorkeling gear and swim straight out onto a reef. If you are lucky, you will meet the friendly big ray.

Trips can be arranged through Porridge, the friendliest and most helpful guy. He was always smiling. Also, on the way to Castara, he stopped off at a large supermarket to pick up whatever we needed for our stay.

In addition, the owners of the house, Carol and Graham, were out there at the same time and made us feel even more welcome.

The bad bit was we had to come home!

It was perfect and personal. Visited: September 2007

We enjoyed swimming at sunset, eating breakfast with the birds, exploring, and chatting with Carole and Graham. We were so lucky to have found the Beach House in Castara.

It was lovely, simple, perfect, and fun. It was also very "us."

As others have noted, Jemma's Treehouse was delicious, and so were the recipies from the "Naparima Girls High School Cookbook" that you can pick up there! The fruit and veggie stand in Castara was quite good, and I was pretty grateful that we made friends with someone waiting for the fishermen to come in, who helped us get some really good fish to cook.

Living more simply was just what we needed...swimming, snorkeling, chatting, eating, reading, hiking and drinking beer in breadfruit grove...it was everything we needed and nothing that we didn't.

We had really hot weather, but swimming helped! The mosquito coils were helpful, too.

I do hope we will be back. Cheers to you, Carole and Graham!

It was paradise at Heavenly Bay. Visited: March 2007

We had a wonderful time staying in Breadfruit Grove at the Beach House. It even managed to exceed our excited expectations!Porridge took and collected us from the airport, which was great, and he was an amazing Mr. Fixit, who was always cheerful!

It was such a lovely location and an idyllic place to stay. We had a good time in the Rainforest with David, and then went on to the Argyll Falls - amazingly beautiful and a very refreshing dip, too!

Also, for two days someone dropped us over to Englishman's Bay in the morning, and collected us in the evening. We had it almost to ourselves- What a piece of paradise! We also had a wonderful boat trip with Michael. We saw beautiful unspoiled bays, caught tuna, saw flying fish and dolphins, and managed to go properly snorkeling for the first time - what an amazing world of tropical fish! We also had a delicious beach BBQ and swam with a ray.

The rest of the time we just chilled and enjoyed great food and fruit/rum punches! Thanks for the celebratory champagne - we appreciated it. Sunsets on the verandah were wonderful, too.

Tobago is a wonderful island, and we have no doubt that we will return to the Beach House one day. One week is not enough!

We were among the first visitors of 2007! New Years Day, we flew into Tobago and found true paradise.

We spent a lot of time just sitting on the veranda watching the seabirds dive for fish like torpedoes. We also enjoyed feeding bananas to the bats, and looking for passing lizards, motmots, and bananaquites. There was so much to see!

We explored the island, and found out that Castara was the best place to stay. They had a beautiful bay, a lovely village, and the most idyllic apartment here was The Beach House!

This is our paradise. Visited: January 2007

We stayed in here for two weeks in January this year. We are tempted not praise how fabulous our visit was, as it could cause the the property being not available the next time we would like to come. It is our honest minds that make us tell the truth.

As mentioned earlier, we really enjoyed our vacation in the Beach House, and the place was just so meant for us. After reading all the previous reviews, we sort of knew what to expect - so there were no big surprises.

First thing that hit us was the stunning location of place. We couldn't believe how close the sea was, which gave us a little bit of light sleep during the first few nights. However, it was even more weird to be back in our own bed in Finland and not to hear the waves!

The apartment was well equipped and everything we needed was there. Even though the apartment was very simple, it felt like home from the beginning. It was also very clean, and Carleen kept it that way during our visit.

A big hug for her dog, Sadam, who came to greet us every time Carleen was over. We enjoyed all the other animals who came to our porch; hens, roosters, lizards, cats ...sometimes it felt like a zoo.

Just the a few words about Castara – it was plain and simple. We loved it. The village was idyllic, and the local people were very friendly. We rented a jeep from Porridge for a week, and drove around a lot.Yet,t we were always happy to return home and enjoy our “own” beach.

Even though Castara may seem a bit far from Crown Point and Scarborough, we didn’t think so. On the road there were always things to see and people to watch. Castara was our place and without a doubt we would stay here again.

A final word about the people of Castara. We were lucky to get to know the owners of the Beach House, Carol and Graham. It was always pleasant to chat with them, and they gave us a lot of useful information.

And then there’s Porridge - that guy was awesome. He took very good care of us, and we had such a good time riding with him to Sunday School. Graham also did his best to entertain us on late night Sunday – and he succeeded.

Beach House and Castara, we fell in love and will be back some day.

It was rustic bliss in Paradise! Visited: January 2007
Posted by ray_diana
We stayed for seven nights in Coconut Heights. We were in the first floor apartment at the Beach House in Castara, and we loved it. The setting and view from the apartment made it very special.

The open balcony was a magical place to sit and watch the pelicans and baker birds diving for fish. The whole apartment had a homey feel to it, with comfy easy chairs and a good sized dining table. The bed was very comfortable, and the shower and toilet spotlessly clean.

During the day, banaquits and tanagiers flocked to the bird feeder (just put in sugar, bread or fruit); whilst at night, fruit bats would flitter by. Fireflies drifted past the shutters with their pulsing glow.

We liked to cook for ourselves some of the time, and having stayed at two other properties over the previous seven nights, we were pleasantly surprised at the level of kitchen equipment here (though we did pine a little for proper wine glasses and ceramic plates).

The owners (Graham and Carol), who were staying in one of the two ground floor apartments, were really helpful but never intrusive.

Porridge is Graham and Carol's local agent and general Mr. Fixit in Castara. I defy anyone to find a more outrageously charming and helpful man. He even conjured up one of his own chickens and some mangos for us. It was the size of a small turkey, which made several meals, and he only charged us £5.

Carline came in to clean mid-week, so there was very little housework required. We also bought fresh fish, bread and vegetables locally. You do need to do a supermarket shop if you want luxuries like olive oil, wine, and coffee, etc. We hired a car for a week, but wouldn't do that again. Why leave Castara?

Beach House is a slice of paradise. Visited: October 2006
Posted by joepete
The Beach House at Tobago was truly a slice of paradise, situated on Heavenly Bay in the most beautiful location in Tobago - Castara. The property was so homely and lovingly decorated, that we felt like it was our own.

Beach House allows guests to capture the true beauty of Castara, situated right on the sand, surrounded by beautiful tropical gardens and visited by countless birds.

The property was excellently maintained and spotlessly clean, and the attention of the managers - Porridge and Jeanelle - was outstanding. Every need was taken care of with no problems.

Our time here (though not long enough) was absolutely superb, and we will be back! It is definitely the best place to stay in Tobago! Thanks to Graham and Carole (owners) for sharing your magic property with us.

Not for everyone? It was perfect for us! Visited: May 2006

My wife and I recently spent a week at the Beach House. On our last full day, we married at Englishman’s Bay.

Our simple advice– if you are looking for a “sophisticated”, air-conditioned sort of place that provides a safety buffer between yourself and the place/people you’ve chosen to visit; and complete with a staff to serve you – the Beach House is probably not for you.

Read the web page carefully. Contact the management with questions, and read their answers. Carefully.

If you wish a truly out-of-the-way place; staying in a facility that blends itself into the local environment; are not intimidated by close interaction with locals (on terms of friendly equality); and are seeking to find new meaning in the term “relaxation”, then by all means consider the Beach House.

We stayed in Palm Corner. We loved it. It had all that we required. We spent most of our time either on the porch enjoying the wonderful birds (this includes chickens), the beautiful view, and the sound of the waves; or swimming and snorkeling in the lovely sea. All of this was eight seconds walk from our porch!

We usually wandered to the village for lunch. The food was generally excellent, especially if you happen to like “chicken or fish”. We prefer fish, and it was fresh! The Tree House, run by Lauro, was a favorite, but try Hazel at L&H, and Vera’s also!

Evenings, we tended to cook in the kitchen, enjoying the breeze and ever-present sound of waves. Dinner on the porch was just grand.

Yes, there are mosquitos, and yes they bite. Use the net provided. And the odd lizard creeping around the room (lovely green colors). Hey, bring some coils, have a Carib, and smile!

What truly makes Castara and the Beach House a haven, are the people. Porridge is a whirlwind of smiles and efficiency. We relied on him greatly. He met our awkwardness and needs with friendliness, and always delivered.

Carol and Graham we will not forget. We enjoyed lovely hours on our wedding eve, of rum drinks and conversation on the porch. They always provided a smile and care for our comfort.

The fellows at the Boat House (never actually opened while we were there, haha), provided us with a private “mini-reception”, drinks and dancing on our wedding day that we’ll never forget. To Benton, Overload, and the Crew –God Bless, and may your carrot wine never run dry.

King David was a great help. See him for tours, or even a fine dinner delivered to your door! Porridge can put you in touch. To Sammy and Bones, DJ, Lauro, and everyone else – we thank you.

On the average great vacation, you are a tourist. At the Beach House in Castara, you become a part of the community. And it's lovely.

We arrived at the Beach House in the dark, and "wow" the ocean was so close that we had the impression it was running through our bedroom!

In the morning, we woke up and were delighted by the amazing view from our balcony. It was just sun, beach, palms and breadfruit trees. Well, there was something else calling our attention this first morning: a hen! She wanted to come in our apartment, but we weren't that responsive of her idea.

In the evening of our first day (Saturday), we tried the "Boathouse" for dinner (as they announced a live band). This little restaurant was close to the Beach House. Brenton, who ran the Boathouse, started dancing with the tourists. Later on, he was entertaining us with a couple of songs, obviously well known to the locals, who had much fun, too.

The next day we put something in the feeder of our balcony to get the birds' attention. It took not more than 15 minutes for the first birds to arrive. We saw motmots and other rare species very close.

In the evening (Sunday), we went with Porridge to the Sunday School. If you like to drink Rum while listening to a great steel band and if you like to dance: don't miss this experience!

On Monday evening, we had a little chat with a local at the Boathouse. We told him about the visit of the hen and that it would be nice if she were laying an egg. Guess what we found that evening on one chair of our balcony? We were not sure if this wasn't a joke from the locals, so we decided to keep a straight face.

To make a long story short: the next morning the hen came on our balcony and sat down on the chair ready to lay one more egg. We got three eggs in one week and I think, if we hadn't disturbed her several times it would have even been more. By the way, the eggs were delicious!

Other things we enjoyed were a boat trip to Pigeon Point (with a great barbecue); eating fresh pineapple standing on a sand bank with our feet in the warm water; and an island trip on our last day.

The vegetation was very beautiful; one bay looked nicer than the other. This was the place to stay!

You will find exactly what is promised on the web site of the Beach House. Read carefully the instructions you get by e-mail, because they are very helpful. Then your stay at the Beach House will be one of the nicest holidays you've ever had. On your ride from the airport or your first day, ask Porridge about things to do (like boat trips, island tours, etc.).

Beach house was pure bliss. Visited: January 2006

The Beach House (and in particular the Coconut Heights apartment) is our favourite place to stay in Tobago. It was situated in an idyllic bay with the Caribbean on our doorstep. We could watch the local fishermen working their territory, the visiting boats come and go, not to mention all the bird and wildlife. We were literally less than 30 seconds from the beach, and the sound of the sea was a constant voice.

Coconut Heights was a perfect retreat. We loved its open aspect, simple living and homey feel. It was not fancy (hooray), but provided all the facilities we needed. There were a few recent updates, including a new fridge and sink for the kitchen. There was also a new shower, which was much appreciated. They were small changes, but significant when you realize the logistics involved!

It was a short walk from the heart of Castara where we foundbasic supplies (we always stocked up at the supermarket on our way from the airport), places to eat (we particulary recommend Vera's - D'Almond Tree), and of course, the delicious bread baked by the local ladies. It was only available Saturdays and Thursdays, I believe.

Porridge and Jeanelle were on hand to help organize any adventures we wanted to go on or just to look in for a chat.

If you are looking for that glamorous Caribbean holiday, this isn't the place for you. If you want something a little off the beaten path, some peace, and easy living, you could not ask for a better 'beach house' in a more wonderful location.

Paradise was found at the Beach House. Visited: November 2005

Tobago, Castara, The Beach House...I've been to over 50 countries and have never considered returning to the same place until now.

The Beach House was everything promised and more than can be described in words. The accommodations were tidy, cozy and romantic. The location was one of the best on earth. It offered breathtaking views, a secluded beach, and a tranquil atmosphere.

The Beach House wasn't a "beachfront" front, it was a part of the beach. Then there was Castara...just enough amenities to make vacationing comfortable, but not enough to feel like a resort area. It was easy to get to know the community within in a couple of days. The people were willing to offer their services, but weren't yet jaded by the tourist trade.

Also, the area seemed to be equally enjoyed by both romantic couples and families with small children. All this was available for about the same price as Motel 6.

Just a word of advice: although there were a few places in Castara to eat out or get basic food stuffs and sundries, you would be well advised to stock up at the market in Scarborough with everything you will need for your stay.

If your idea of a holiday is simply falling out of bed and into the sea, this is for you. My wife and I have just returned from the Beach House, and cannot believe that we were actually there!

After pouring over the pictures taken during our stay, we have both vowed to return soon. The wildlife on the 'door step' took our breath away. And the birds, the lizards, and the fireflies at night were always in constant sight. We will never forget the cheeky Banana-quit! What a character this was!

The sea contained some of the most interesting sights once we passed D'Original Mayor. Shoals of fish and parrot fish were visible on every visit. We also spent relaxing evenings watching the pelicans dive for supper whilst the sun melted into the sea and the dinner was in the oven (with a cold Carib in hand of course!).

The property was well maintained and kept spotless thanks to Jeanelle and Porridge, who looked in on a regular basis to make sure everything was okay. Porridge was an excellent host and source of information. He made sure that all the guests were happy.

I have read all the other reviews, and holidays are what you make of them. This certainly made ours for us. There was little else that we needed or wanted to do.

Many thanks to all those who made us welcome. And thanks to our new friends, Porridge, Jeanelle, Shakile, Duck, Anaconda, Duane, Nils and Irene, Nobert and Tanya, and all the friendly local shop owners and restaurants staff.

The Beach House left a lasting impression. Visited: June 2005
Posted by jrborges
My wife and I visited The Beach House the first week in June and had a wonderful experience. Castara was truly unique - from the people and culture, to the scenic sunrises and sunsets.

Don't spend a long time in Castara if you like typical restaurants, hotels and bars - Castara has none of these. What you will find is a handful of small open-air restaurants serving local cuisine and a few local bars.

We stayed in one of the smaller rooms at The Beach House. The room was nice with a small kitchen and great views off the deck. I suggest staying in the larger apartment upstairs if it is available. There was much more space and it had really good views of the sunset. Overall, I can't think of a better place to stay in Castara other than The Beach House.

Castara was a rustic village with a slow and easy feel. The people were friendly and the town was safe. From Castara we were able to take several day trips to explore the island. We took a guided rainforest tour with one of King David’s guides named Kelly. You must do this - it was very memorable!

Another day, we went on a day-long fishing/snorkeling trip with a local gentleman nicknamed "Duck". This was also a "must do". It was some of the best snorkeling I have ever done. For scuba divers, you should take a trip to Speyside and spend the day there after your dives. There was also a waterfall in Castara that you can walk to in about 20 minutes. Englishmen’s Bay was a short cab ride away, with a scenic beach and good snorkeling.

Our contact points to arrange all of these activities were Porridge and Janelle - they were both very helpful.

I do have to make a few recommendations to those considering a full week at the Beach House. On your way in from the airport, stop at the grocery store and pick up mosquito coils, bug spray, any film you may need, cash (I didn't find one place in Castara taking credit), plenty of food, and beer.

This is because there was not a grocery in Castara, and going into town was a three-hour round trip ordeal (plus about $100 in cab fare). There was food in Castara, but mostly smaller stuff like bread, fruit, alcohol and soft drinks.

I do recommend renting a car - especially if you are used to driving on the left side of the road - as an American it was stressful! The roads were narrow, and the locals drove fast.

There were many things we saw and did that I can’t explain in words – it was a feel and calm of the town and the island that have left a life-long impression.

We look forward to another trip to Tobago and Castara – and we hope it never changes!

Forget what you read and see in the Internet, because it’s so much better you can’t imagine! Be prepared for a relaxing place in a wonderful green environment, and stay close to the beach!

The Beach House was absolutely perfect, and gave us a kind of “Robinson Crusoe” feeling. But you will miss nothing there in the apartment. The kitchen was perfectly equipped, and the bed was very comfortable.

On the spacious balcony, we could watch and feed the birds, or just lay in the hammock and enjoy the amazing view. If we began to sweat, we could just jump into the sea and go snorkeling!

Everything was just a few steps from the Beach House. If we had any problems or questions, we could just ask Porridge. He took care of us every day, and made impossible things possible!

Our advice is to stay here, enjoy the view, the beach, the people - and forget all your problems!

I have an alternative view of this accommodation. Visited: May 2005

I must say that flying in the face of so much fulsome praise makes me feel like a heretic, like the boy who pointed out that the Emperor wore no clothes. However, in the interests of balance, fly in the face I must.

The apartments, or at least those occupying the lower story, were basic. The mosquitoes which amassed at dusk were voracious, so much so that it was not possible to enjoy sunsets on the porch. Even with all hatches closed, our living quarters were infested with hundreds of flying insects. One evening a cockroach the size of a mouse emerged from the cooker.

The beach, just feet from the apartment, was pleasant enough, but not one of the world's best. It also rained in Castara for four days non -stop, and the remaining days were not beset with brilliant sunshine.

Where were the women selling coconut bread? Where did the reviewer buy the wine he sipped? The shops we found seemed to have only the most limited fare - when they opened, that is.

The restaurants - and I use the term loosely- were similar. There seemed to be no rhyme or reason as to when they were open for business. When they were, we were given the stark choice " fish or chicken". This was food for survival, not enjoyment. We bought our own from the shops- a wonderful choice of tinned tuna or corned beef.

As to entertainment, we won't go into that. If you don't wish to be confined to Castara, you will need transport. However, I cannot imagine that negotiating Tobago's roads would be a pleasant or relaxing experience.

I have no problem accepting that my fellow reviewers enjoyed their time in Castara and, indeed, in the apartments. However, the reviews led my wife and I to expect something other than which we experienced. This review will, I hope, help those expecting a sophisticated holiday - help them to look elsewhere. That is only fair, I feel , as flying to Tobago from Europe or the States is a long haul.

I don't wish to sound like a snob with regard to the apartments or Castara: I lived, worked and travlled extensively in East Africa, so I am more than capable of roughing it in remote areas. However, this was to be a holiday- one of a lifetime as the saying goes - and, as such, I was hoping for more.

PROPERTY REPLY

We are sorry that Mike and his wife didn't enjoy their stay at Beach House - we don't market our accommodation as luxurious or sophisticated and it really isn't for anyone looking for that kind of holiday. Castara is a small fishing village and offers a simple, laid back experience. Its shops sell only basic groceries and a limited selection of fresh fruits and vegetables so in our information we send to guests prior to their stay, we advise them to stop at a supermarket en route from the airport to stock up from a larger choice. We also advise that the restaurant opening times are sporadic and their menus are dependent on what's available. We are sorry that Mike was unlucky with the weather and had four days of rain, as this brings out the downside of the tropics, the mosquitoes. We suggest that guests bring insect repellant from home and to buy the coils in the local store to help keep them at bay. Many of our guests have enjoyed the coconut drops and other bakery treats that the local ladies cook at the school every Thursday and also the fresh fish that the fishermen pull in on the big bay. We ask our guests to speak to Porridge, our manager, if they have any questions or concerns as he is extremely friendly and helpful and does his utmost to ensure everyone has a good time. I am sure that if Mike and his wife had voiced their concerns at the time, they would have had a more enjoyable experience of Castara and Beach House.

We're writing this four months after getting back, and have been feeling guilty for not doing it earlier. But you can be very sure that this really is a special place because even now it brings a smile.

From the moment we got there and saw our view from the verandah, we knew we'd found perfection. It was not a fancy modern resort, but a romantic hideaway, surrounded outstanding natural beauty.

Graham and Carol (who own it) invited us up to their place for a Carib, and we drank them while looking at the setting sun. They were brilliant hosts, taking us to the shop, chatting, even sharing their freshly caught fish with us.

Our room was very well equipped, and the village was lovely. We were only here four nights, but could have stayed much, much longer.

If you don't want another sterile, could-be-anywhere hotel, you'll love this.

The Beach House offers the ultimate "chill out" experience. Visited: February 2005
Posted by subaxter
Reading through the reviews, most of it has been said already, but nothing can prepare you for this totally relaxing experience.

To sleep with the sound of the sea, to be within feet of a glorious beach - these are the tangible things. Trying to describe what it is that makes the Beach House and Castara so special is difficult.

For two weeks we became part of a local community that was so totally different. We were made very welcome by Porridge, Graham and Carole. All of the time we were at the Beach House, we felt safe in that everyone, including the locals, was looking out for us.

Castara is a fishing village. If you are looking for a sophisticated resort, it is probably not for you. Two weeks with no TV, radio or newspapers was bliss. Feeding the birds on our balcony, watching the sea and the sunsets was a more than fair exchange.

We stayed in 'Breadfriuit Grove', Kitchen / cooking facilities were excellent but we would recommend not taking many clothes. For one thing - you don't need them, for another, cupboard space is very limited. Next time we go it will be one small suitcase!

We have just returned from a fabulous two weeks at the Beach House. We had looked for a "back to basics" holiday and found it all and more in Castara.

Our accommodation (Palm Corner), although simple, was clean and sufficed all our needs. Jeanell looked after us superbly and Porridge was always on hand to offer help and advice - what he didn't know wasn't worth knowing!

The Beach House had stunning views over the ocean, the sunsets were breathtaking. From here we watched pelicans catching fish and we also caught our own "red snapper" from the rock just in front of Palm Corner.

At Marguerite's (in the village), we had good food, we even sampled goat, and The Boat House (next door to The Beach House) also served tasty meals. We bought freshly baked bread from the local ladies, the coconut drops were delicious. We enjoyed shopping in the village, the locals were so friendly.

A hike in the rainforest is recommended, as is a boat trip with Marvin (great skipper). We toured the island, but never found anywhere quite as picturesque as Castara.

All in all, we had a fabulous holiday, made special by Carole and Graham, Porridge and Jeanell and last but by no means least, the locals, who welcomed us into their lives. They were truly amazing people, living life as it ought to be lived.

We are already planning our next visit.

This was just the right mixture of adventure and comfort. The beach, town, people, accommodations, food and Porridge all made for a delightful stay.

We bought fresh fish right off the boat for very cheap prices. Local dining places were simple and excellent. The area was very safe as the locals were always watching out for us.

We can't wait to return. Be sure to find Marvin for a good day on the water.
