Villa Montana Beach is Paradise found. Visited: July 2008

My husband and I just returned from Villa Montana Beach Resort, and we had a lovely time.

We had the chance to attend a destination wedding, as my cousin was getting married at the resort. It was a hassle-free direct flight from Ft. Lauderdale into the Aguadilla airport.

My cousin had arranged through the resort to have all of her guests picked up in a town car, this saved us from renting a car but it was available if we needed it. It was a short drive, only fifteen minutes or so down rural roads, and as we turned the corner there was this beautiful Caribbean paradise. I can see why she chose it.

Our villa had breathtaking views of the crystal blue Caribbean Sea, and from our private verandah we enjoyed amazing sunsets that we still talk about. The wedding was beautiful overlooking the ocean at dusk.– it made me wish that I had found this place 15 years ago when my husband and I were married.

The staff made us feel welcomed, and they always had a hello and a warm smile as we passed them around the grounds.

We were here for four days, and there was so much to do we had a hard time deciding how to spend our free time. My husband and I went horseback riding along the secluded beach, and also took a great mountain bike ride into lush green forests.

The setting of the Villa Montana Beach Resort allowed us to rekindle our romance and get back in touch with the great outdoors. We have great memories of our trip, and hope to come back again one day.

We were very disappointed. Visited: March 2008

My girlfriend and I stayed at Villa Montana in Aguadilla for a week in March, and it was horrible. We are both avid travelers, and have gone to many Caribbean destinations. This was, by far, the worst.

We never felt welcomed anywhere. The staff was disrespectful and rude to us. Nothing is more unattractive than sitting on a beach and seeing locals throwing beer bottles into the ocean.

Service at restaurant was so slow, and the food was overpriced. I shouldn’t have to go on a Caribbean vacation and have to hunt down the bartender to get another drink, a bill - or even water.

There was no island atmosphere here, either. We couldn’t wait to pack to go home. I suggest you save your money and go elsewhere.

This is the best resort for family and romance Visited: November 2007
Posted by gwensmith
Our family went for a getaway to Villa Montana Beach Resort for Thanksgiving. We wanted a quick and easy location with lots of sun and warmth. With Jetblue flying out of Newark, it was perfect. It was cheap and quick to get to Villa Montana from home, and only a few minutes from Aquadilla airport. What a treat, especially when traveling with three kids.

We like Puerto Rico, but had never stayed on the west coast. Villa Montana looked like a good alternative to all the action in the east. Frankly, we were looking for more peace and quiet this time. However, the kids needed to have things to do, and Villa Montana was the ticket.

They could swim, hike, play tennis, horseback ride and snorkel. Snorkeling at Villa Montana was some of the best in the Caribbean - and now the kids want to surf.

My husband and I loved Villa Montana. We walked that beautiful stretch of beach. The villa was expansive and comfortable. We could cook in our villa, and some nights we cooked the kids dinner and then went for a romantic dinner on our own.

We also went for drinks in the cool “O” Bar, then had dinner at The Eclipse Restaurant, which is right the ocean and lit with candles and torches. It was breathtaking.

The food was exceptional, not cheap, but worth every penny. And we were never rushed. We could enjoy the peace and quiet and romance of the evening without feeling that they wanted to turn our table.

We’ll be back to Villa Montana. This place really is a piece of heaven -and we’ve been around.

This was a quiet Puerto Rico beach getaway from Vermont snow! Visited: January 2007
Posted by vermontwanderer
My husband and I just came back from a quick escape from Vermont to Villa Montana.

First off, we did JetBlue all the way. It was a long night, but the cost, or lack of it, more than made up. We left Burlington at 6:45 and got to Aguadilla at 4:30 a.m. - with a three-hour layover at JFK. We had time for dinner and a good read. I sleep on planes, and my husband likes to write when he has some peace, so he was a happy camper.

There was a taxi waiting for us at the airport, and after about a 15 minute drive we were going into the resort. There were torches burning at the entrance to the front desk, candles inside and a cold towel waiting for us. Not bad at 5 a.m., I thought. The check in person was also the night watchman, and he couldn't have been nicer. His English was perfect.

We fell into bed to the sound of the tiny frogs chirping away. That seemed pretty auspicious to two nature-loving Vermonters. The sun was just coloring the sky and, yes, we could hear the waves.

When we made it out of bed, we hit the coffee maker (we brought our own coffee as we are totally addicted) then the terrace for a settle and figure out of where we were and what to do. We booked a one-bedroom villa in the garden area as there was nothing available on the beach. It was compact, had a great patio with travertine/coral pavers, a wrought iron surround, gecko/chameleons checking us out and looked to be a place to spend the day.

The web site indicated not to expect action and glitz and there was, indeed, no action, and no bustle. We felt like we were alone except for the gardeners cruising around. They did not have weed whackers, so that was good.

The decor had lots of original artwork from the island. The end of the living area (small) opened out right onto our terrace with French doors.

There was even a gecko chameleon exploring the floor. Love those tropics!

We then carried on with a day that continued into a three-hour breakfast lunch /luxuriate at a restaurant that really did sit right on the beach and was totally open air. For us it was a slice of heaven. The food was fine, also.

You can hear that we felt really at home right away. We ambled over to the front desk and worked out a sort of baby scuba lesson for the next morning.

We enjoyed more lounging, beach walking, reading, and sleeping. Then, we took the plane home to Burlington and 0 degrees.

This was the perfect place to get away. Visited: December 2004
Posted by agreen1
My wife and I visited Villa Montana for three nights - Dec.21-24,2004. We travel the Caribbean extensively, and always check out new places to stay.

After a 90-minute cab ride from the airport, we were greeted by several extremely nice staff and driven by golfcart to our one-bedroom oceanfront villa.

The room was very nice with an adequate size bedroom and kitchen, sitting room (with a tv and couch). From the terrace, there were amazing views of the well-maintained grounds, the palm trees and the beach/ocean, which was only 30 yards away.

The food and service at the restaurant overlooking the beach were top-notch. The two pools were excellent, and the fitness facility was more than fine to keep the pounds off. You can walk the beach both ways for miles.

We wanted to try another restaurant off the resort grounds one night, and due to no taxis being available, one of the staff drove us and then picked us up when we called. That was truly beyond the call of duty.

If you want to just get away, this is the place. Of course, there are telephones, television, etc. (and cell phones work in Puerto Rico), but it was very relaxing, and we would recommend this place to anyone.

We had a wedding in Paradise. Visited: March 2004
Posted by mlozada2
My wife and I were married at Villa Montaña Beach Resort (VMBR) last year. It was one of the most idyllic and romantic resorts we’ve ever been.

Tucked away in the northwest corner of the island, away from the traffic and congestion of the metropolitan area, it was like being on its own island. The crashing waves, the constant trade winds and the sunsets all made for a soothing and relaxing atmosphere.

We live in NYC, so 90% of the wedding arrangements were via phone/fax/email. New Yorkers are notoriously demanding, but the VMBR management did a remarkable job of addressing our needs and gaining our trust. They were tremendously flexible, patient and accommodating. They made our wedding that much more unforgettable.

The menu at Eclipse teemed with Caribbean and international influences, the villas were delightful, very well equipped and maintained. The beach was gorgeous and unspoiled. We walked for miles and encountered very few people.

It has been just over a year since our wedding, and our guests still talk about the marvelous experience they (we) all had at VMBR.

We highly recommend it to anyone seeking a romantic (or not) get-away. If you’re considering a destination wedding, we can’t think of a more beautiful setting than on the shore facing the sparkling blue waters of the Atlantic, with the gentle sounds of the waves crashing.

Beautiful grounds, but mediocre amenities and service for the price. Visited: March 2004
Posted by markpacker
My wife and I stayed at Villa Montana for a week in March of 2004. We had an oceanview, one-bedroom villa. This included a small bedroom, hallway, kitchenette, small bathroom and living room.

The resort had gorgeous, well maintained grounds. There were giant cauldrons of flowering shrubs, immaculately cared for lawns, unusual trees and plantings adorned the facility, which was also teaming with tropical birds.

The Eclipse Restaurant, an al fresco bar and dining area, was also beautifully designed, overlooking the beach, and had excellent - but unchanging and limited - fare.

The facility had two well maintained tennis courts. There was also a climbing wall, a few plastic ocean kayaks, two very nice swimming pools, a small weight room, and riding stables adjoining the property.

The surf in front of the resort was rough the entire week we were here, making it all but unsuitable for swimming by the very strongest. The beach for miles in either direction was empty. However, the neighboring stables conducted rides on the beach each day, so long romantic walks were tempered with dodging the “remains of the day” from the last horse caravan.

One of the best things my wife and I did at Villa Montana was have a massage. Their masseuse was just amazing, and the table was set up under a thatched roof, out at the edge of the beach. The rhythmic sound of the waves breaking and the experienced hands of the masseuse just melted away all stress and tension of the working world.

The staff at Villa Montana was pleasant and generally accommodating. However, they were not particularly forthcoming with information about the resort or activities in the surrounding area.

The resort was also flawed in some very significant ways. There were, what appeared to be septic tanks located in front of many of the villas. As we walked through the grounds between units we were accosted by the odor of these tanks. It was not horrible, but for what the resort charged per night, they need to figure out a better to deal with sewage.

Housekeeping and maintenance were also problems. Bathroom items were sometimes not restocked. Our sink and toilet drained poorly. There were several basic utensils missing from our little galley kitchen when we arrived. Some days they left us coffee, sometimes they didn’t. The resort provided guests with a toaster and coffeemaker but no table to set these items on near an electric receptacle. These problems may seem trivial, but for $440/night, we expected better.

The resort has the potential to be a really first-class destination. But if excellence is in the details, the staff and management should follow the examples of the groundskeeper.

It is beautiful and peaceful here. Visited: February 2004

We found Villa Montana on the internet and enjoyed it so much we've been back three times in two years. The beautifully landscaped, well-kept grounds enhance the natural tropical setting. Hammocks, lounge chairs and several lovely bamboo double cabanas are scattered tastefully along the beach. It is perfect for sun bathing, reading or watching the surf roll in.

Long walks, along the reasonably isolated beach are refreshingly peaceful.

Two well-maintained swimming pools are just steps away for those who may prefer lounging in a pool. And the beach is somewhat rocky right at the water's edge, but there are several sandy access spots. Once in the water, it is warm and free of seaweed, as is the sandy beach.

The attitude and responsiveness of the management and staff to every request was outstanding. We also enjoyed some quiet dinners at the Eclipse Restaurant and Bar. It was definitely gourmet dining; a stone's throw from the water, in an incredibly unique and beautiful outdoor tropical setting.

The restaurant also served a buffet breakfast during the busy season, which was reasonably priced and very adequate. We usually ate breakfast in our Villa, but breakfast and lunch were served daily. The bar was always open and served numerous specialty tropical drinks, which could be taken to the beach.

Although I came armed with various bug repellants, I found the bug population much less than other Caribbean islands because of the constant breeze.

The Villas were clean, well kept and nicely decorated. The one- bedroom villas were functional. All had patios. The two-bedroom villa, which we called home, was just perfect.

We flew into San Juan, about one hour 45 minutes away and rented a car. We preferred to have a car available as the resort was secluded.

We found Villa Montana the perfect place to relax and rejuvenate. Enjoy the sun, swim, play tennis, get a message, exercise, eat, read a book. Do anything or do nothing!

We had a great lazy vacation! Visited: December 2003

We really enjoyed our stay here. The property was beautiful, the staff was friendly and helpful, and the room was very comfortable.

We saw other people around, but it always seemed very quiet and peaceful.

The restaurant was great. The portion sizes were totally inconsistent which drove me nuts, but my husband didn't care at all. The food was not cheap - standard resort prices. Our room came with a continental breakfast which was generous on most days.

A couple of notes I hope will be helpful...
Definitely rent a car. We didn't (they picked us up in San Juan) because we planned to just sit around and relax. Once I finished my book, I would have gone crazy if some other guests had not taken us out on a day trip. Aside from the horse stables, there were no other businesses or restaurants within walking distance.

The beach was rocky, and during the winter the surf was pretty rough. You need to be a strong swimmer and the current was too strong for floating or snorkeling. We watched other guests rent kayaks and flounder in the rough surf and decided not to try it ourselves.

They told me a 'swimmable' beach was a short walk away, but I walked for 20 minutes and never found it. With a car you could try out other, more protected, beaches. Both pools were well-maintained.

The extra space you get in a villa is worth it. We never used our kitchen as we intended, but we loved having a separate living room. The pictures on the website were a two-bedroom villa. The one-bedroom villa was not so light and airy but still had plenty of space.

There were dogs everywhere. They seemed harmless, but if you’ve got a problem with dogs this may not be the place for you. Don't forget to take bug repellant!

All in all, this was a great place to just sit in a hammock, drink a pina colada, watch the waves roll in and forget about everything else.

It's the perfect getaway and a great way to see Puerto Rico. Visited: March 2003

My husband and I had only seen the web site, but liked what we saw.

The drive to the hotel was not quite two hours. The hotel, which was made up of private villas, was gorgeous. We had no idea it would be so beautiful. All the flowers and the birds made us feel like we were in a tropical paradise.

Our villa was spacious and very well equipped, and the decor was elegant, but not stuffy. We felt very much at home.

We had planned to do a lot of nothing, but found ourselves going snorkeling, taking long walks on the beach which went for miles - and it was deserted. We visited some great Indian caverns in Camoy, drove up into the mountains, ate at a typical restaurant and got lost; we met some wonderful people who actually led us (in their car) back to the main road.

We spent most of our time at the hotel ...the swimming was great. One morning we went kayaking, and the view from the water towards the cliffs and the beach was breathtaking. One day we even tried the rock climbing.

Our evenings were quiet...we were exhausted after all our activities. A delicious dinner at the hotel restaurant was just what we needed. I think we had the whole fresh red snapper three times during our stay. It was yummy! Every night the waiter would make sure "our" table was ready for us...we liked to be out on the deck with just the torches and the candles. The table was right on the beach - it was just fabulous.

We only had one slight downside. Although we were flying from New York City, if we had known there was a direct flight from Newark to Aguadilla, we probably would have taken that one. I think the reservations person should have mentioned it.

Still, my husband and I have made a reservation for next year...same villa, same table!

This was a beautiful resort with many free activities and a friendly atmosphere. Visited: February 2002

This resort had pristine grounds and a isolated quality that gave it a meditative quality - especially during the week when owners of their villas were away.

We stayed in a one bedroom that was small, but acceptable and beautifully furnished. There was no separate kitchen area or table at which to eat, so we used the coffee table and sofa.

The babysitter we used was excellent and the kids had a great time at the rock climbing wall and pool. The beach was beautiful, but there were a lot of rocks that made swimming difficult for adults and impossible for small children. However, Hobos beach was nearby and great.

The resort was not 90 minutes from the San Juan airport, but it was 2 hours with almost no traffic and could easily be 2.5 hours with traffic.

A beautiful, small resort Visited: December 2001
Posted by refrisbi
We really had fun at this beautiful, small resort on our honeymoon. The villas are very clean, and we would recommend going for the 1-bedroom villa over the queen room. For just a little more money, you get a much bigger room with a kitchenette. There are also larger houses that you can rent, and these looked super-nice as well.

The beach is beautiful, with great snorkeling right off the beach. A calmer beach, Jobos, is just a 1-minute drive or 10-minute walk down the beach. We were there in the winter, and my husband likes to surf, so this beach was great for him. However, there are protected areas for swimming/snorkeling as well. The tennis courts, rock climbing wall, and pools were also very nice. This place has a "family atmosphere" among guests and everyone seemed very friendly.

The restaurant is also excellent and offers great food in a great atmosphere. Overall, we thought it was wonderful, and we are looking forward to going back soon!
