This Caribbean gem tops the charts nearly every year for its service and luxurious accommodations. Hidden away amid bounteous tropical foliage and coconut palms, The Four Seasons easily lives up to the hotel chain's worldwide reputation for the finest in everything.

Several things are exceptional here, beginning with the Robert Trent Golf Course, which garners kudos from golfers far and wide. Then there's the service at the pools, where you'll be pampered to your hearts desire. And for those in a family mode there's the nursery school-type babysitting service, which many families visiting say is the best they've found. Run by former teachers, the service is located in its own little room, you expect Miss Jean from Ding-Dong-School to greet you at the door.

The hotel is situated directly on Pinney's beach. This beach is the widest, longest beach on Nevis, with coconut palms dotting the property and pathways leading between the two-story guest cottages and the Great House, pool and dining areas. The Four Seasons sustained a big hit with Hurricane Georges in 1998 but emerged looking brighter and better than ever. Though the structures were generally fine, much of the landscaping was damaged. A major overhaul of the botanical side of the hotel has resulted in a property so naturally tropical in feeling, you expect to encounter a waterfall at every turn. Even with 196 rooms, the Four Seasons maintains an intimate, smaller resort feel.

The guest rooms are luxurious, with large verandas facing the sea, lovely traditional style furnishings, and large bathrooms that could definitely keep you in your room with your own personal robe and bath slippers waiting for you when you step out of the shower or bath. Besides that, each room has a stocked bar, ironing board, slippers, umbrella, safe, TV and video player (to go with the hotel's video library).

The rooms have glass doors to the outside, but also wooden louvered sliding doors to provide the ultimate in privacy if desired. The rooms are all air conditioned, with direct-dial phones and voice mail.

The food at the resort is premium quality. West Indian, seafood and continental specialties are served in the formal Dining Room, which is open, but indoors. There is also the Grill Room, which is a Mediterranean, open air restaurant with views of the sea and the Pool Cabana, where lunch, dinner and sunset cocktails are served with the waves lapping at your toes.

There are activities: windsurfing, kayaking, snorkeling, sailing, aqua cycling along Pinney's Beach, a long stretch of beach (not the white sand of some Caribbean beaches-slightly darker) lined with coconut palms.

Golfers, of course, flock here because of the championship quality Robert Trent Jones course, and tennis players enjoy the 10-court Peter Burwash International tennis complex (half of them are clay courts).

Lolling by the pool, however, is perhaps the simplest but most enjoyable activity, if that's your choice. First the chairs - already the most comfortable lounge chairs in their own right - are lined with towels by the pool staff. If you get up, or should they get wet (oh, no!), the staff changes or at least straightens them for you. You get spritzed if you're too hot and served icy Evian water to keep you cool.

Regardless of your interests, there's something at the Four Seasons that will tickle your fancy, and tickle it with style and class. It's as near "the perfect Caribbean vacation experience" that one could imagine, located on the not so crowded, still somewhat undiscovered island of Nevis. The combination is heavenly!
