The unexpected condition of resort facility disappointed us. Visited: June 2005
Posted by gillisps
It was bad news from the moment the airport van pulled into the driveway of the Wyndham Rose Hall Resort.

The building looked like it should be renovated. I would not categorize this resort as being one for those seeking luxury or high quality. The rooms and food were substandard when compared to other resorts we have stayed in on previous vacations. It was so bad that we requested that our travel agent (Air Jamaica Vacations) send us to another resort or make arrangements for us to fly home immediately.

Fortunately, we were able to have our reservations transferred to the Sunset Jamaica Grande in Ocho Rios. Our vacation would have been ruined, if we were forced to stay at the Wyndham. We found this facility to be a poor representative for the Wyndham chain.

If you have kids, this is the place to go. Visited: February 2005

Sugar Mills Water Park is what makes this hotel worth going to. I traveled with my two children (ages eight and 18 months). The eight-year-old had the time of his life as the lazy river and slides were excellent.

The food and entertainment were average as there was a one-week plan for both - if you go for two weeks, you know what's coming the second week!

The rooms we were allocated were interconnecting and were comfortable - especially the beds. The staff was, on the whole, really friendly and accommodating.

The beach was probably the worst I've experienced in the Caribbean, and was rather disappointing. Overall, though, we had a great time and would recommend the hotel if the daytime is most important to you (as the evenings are pretty dull here).

YOUR WIFE WILL CHEAT ON YOU Visited: November 2004

This hotel is amazing, I went to get married and during my stay my future wife decided to have an affair with one of the bar staff. I am now getting divorced and our daughter has a broken home.

We had a good vacation. Visited: January 2004

This was a good resort, but not for the brochure price (try to get a deal as we did).

The beach was not for the beach lovers, it was very small. There were plenty of lounge chairs available, though, always! And the water park was great fun for kids and adults as well.

The best bartender was Gregory at the pool bar. He was always polite and happy, he deserved a recognition.

Go all-inclusive, or be prepared to spend a lot of money. The cards that we had to carry with us were a pain, but we got okay with it after two days. Remember, it is Jamaica! Be happy, have fun, and smile a lot, "mon"!

We had a relaxing family vacation here. Visited: December 2003
Posted by sefkowitz
This was our first family vacation abroad - we traveled with our boys 7, 13 and 16. We also went all inclusive. Unless you're looking for the Four Seasons, the Wyndham was perfect.
We rarely saw the boys as they were content to play in the pool, on the beach or off with the activities director and the gang of friends they made.

The food was fine, the boys enjoyed trying new things and my husband and I didn't go hungry. The only drawback was having to tote around a credit card to "pay" for everything - although the kids really liked having their own card to get poolside lunch and drinks.

If you want a place to rest and relax and you want to bring the kids along - the Wyndham is a perfect Jamaican vacation.

I had a brilliant holiday with their friendly and gorgeous staff. Visited: December 2003

I had a really great holiday with excellent food - especially in the Three Palms restaurant with a gorgeous waiter named Damian.

The pool and the waterpark were great and I loved it here. The activity staff was nice, especially Richard and Garnett.

The rooms were average and there was hardly any hot water. But overall, it was excellent! I would advise anyone come here.

A good time was had by all! Visited: December 2003
Posted by barrer1
Overall, we had a great stay at the resort. We went over Christmas vacation with three late teenage boys. They each had a good time and found something to do and a friend to do it with. It was relaxing for my wife and me since we could do our thing and know the boys were fine.

All in all, the food for an all-inclusive was above average to downright good - depending where we went. We did not have a bad meal. I would recommend a dinner at Mama Lou's in Montego Bay, it was well worth spending above and beyond the all-inclusive.

The golf was great, it was a fun course and was challenging enough. The tennis pros were very nice and more than willing to hit with a guest for nominal fee. The water park was great for all ages, even us older folks.

The only downside was if you are a beach person, this may not be for you. It was narrow and the water certainly wasn't crystal clear. Also, the hot water was not always available, but usually at least it was warm.

From our experience, we would certainly go back again. The people were the nicest of any of the islands we have been. Tips were certainly appreciated, but not required. Go and have a great family vacation.

Americans Favoured. Visited: May 2003
Posted by dee
We stayed at the Wyndham in May/June 2003 and had a good holiday. After reading the other reviews we do agree with the comments about the credit cards and the queues especially at Mangos Pool Bar. The majority of staff was rude, especially if you were British. The gift staff shop needs to enroll in a customer care course!

Americans (sorry) received better service possibly due to the fact that they were tipping, which annoyed the British (since we needed to queue at the bar for 20 minutes for a drink in the evening). The Gazebo Bar was the only bar which was worth a visit, but needs more seating.

The beach was clean and the restaurants were good. The Three Palms is superb in all aspects, the staff in the Java Cafe was superb, The Terrace was adequate but the waiters were very rude. The hotel in general was good, but working in travel I would only rate this hotel as a 3-star plus.

This was a wonderful place to stay! Visited: May 2003
Posted by fowood
My wife and I first booked our trip at a dump down the road from the Wyndham, and the day after we arrived, we walked to the Wyndham to check it out.

After what we saw, we decided we wanted to spend the rest of our vacation at Wyndham. It was a great place to stay. The only complaint we had about the resort were the ladies who worked in the gift shops. They were very rude and short with the guests, and their prices were outrageous!

The rest of the staff, the restaurants, entertainment, food, drinks, etc. were all wonderful. It was a little pricy, but well worth what we had to compare it to just down the road. We will definitely stay at Wyndham when we come back to Jamaica. We wouldn't stay anywhere else. It was "two thumbs up"!

We are already planning our next trip. Visited: May 2003

We just returned from our honeymoon in Jamaica, and the Wyndham was our choice of resort. Everything was perfect and we really don't have anything to complain about.

The views were stunning, the food was terrific, the water was drinkable, the staff was friendly and warm, and overall -- it was paradise. Also, the golf course was breathtaking. I urge you to go for a round just for the scenery alone.

When you become a Wyndham By Request member, you receive free upgrades. This was worth it.

I would definitely recommend Wyndham Rose Hall in Montego Bay to anyone going to Jamaica. We are already planning our next trip. We can't wait.

We had a fantastic family vacation. Visited: March 2003
Posted by ricknelson427
Kudos to my wife for planning a perfect family vacation. After visiting several hotels along the Montego Bay area, this had to be the nicest family stay anywhere along the coast. Everything about our stay was next to perfect.

Negatives: I agree with the negative comments I've read about the all-inclusive cards, a band would have been easier. I assumed this was a way for the company to track consumption and needs, so I did not let it bother me.

Check into all the details of the offsite tours and/or activities before you book them.

Too many visitors treated the staff as servants and left their empty cups, plates, garbage and towels for them to pick up instead of taking care of it on their own. Our room was located just outside the courtyard where the band played sometimes until well after midnight. That made it impossible to sleep.

Positives: The staff was very accommodating and personable. From time to time, I tipped people for outstanding service even though that was part of the all-inclusive package. There were many more staff people available than I thought was necessary.

On the other hand, the beach, patio, dining areas, pools, bars and grounds were always being cleaned and manicured so the grounds always looked their best.

The water (both in the pool and the ocean) was very clean, warm, and clear. Water equipment was always available and several of the people offered their services to help us operate some of it. The hotel had many onsite activities for families to enjoy, so you are never bored. They also had a Sunday night beach party including food and entertainment which was very enjoyable.

I highly recommend trying all the restaurants available on-site and not go to the same ones every day. You need variety. Three Palms was an absolutely stunning restaurant to eat in. We were seated outdoors overlooking the hillside and ocean. The food and atmosphere was spectacular. We were made to feel like dignitaries.

We would definitely return to Jamaica and would certainly stay here again.

They had a great pool area! Visited: February 2003
Posted by jtwombly
We vacationed at the Wyndham Rose Hall this February with our two boys (age five and four). The resort was overall reasonably nice if you are traveling with kids.

The pool area was the highlight of our trip. The lazy river was super fun and the three small slides were great for the boys because the boys were not tall enough or old enough to ride the big slide. My husband and I loved the big slide which you come down in the yellow tube.

The landscaping was lush and we never felt crowded around the pool area. We did go down every day at 7:00 am to get a great spot for the day, though.

We went on the glass bottom boat ride which was nice, it was a little inconvenient to get a shuttle to the Rose Hall Beach Club, though.

The food was fine, nothing special. The buffet food tended to be dry. But the Oriental night was excellent. We also found the service to be friendly. We never had a bad experience. Remember - you are in Jamaica: Everything does tend to go a little slower, so just relax and enjoy.

We went on a shopping trip which was fine. The shopkeepers tried to get people to buy things they didn't want, so people just needed to be firm. The craft market was the scariest, as far as the peddlers. I stayed on the bus and let my husband do the bartering.

Our first room smelled musty and I asked for a change and they were more than happy to accommodate. The new room had great views, so we were very happy.

Some of the kids events were good, and the magician was very good. The bingo was annoying because you had to buy a bingo card for each round. Please - the kids just want to play bingo! Don't make children pay to play Bingo to win Rum as a prize.

Overall, the resort was nice , but we could see it needed some "TLC" as far as the actual building was concerned.

This place was paradise. Visited: February 2003
Posted by minassian
Our family of four just got back from the Wyndham Rose Hall last week. This was our third time in Montego Bay and it was easily the best.

For the money, it's the best all-inclusive we've been to. If you have kids, it's even better. Sign up for Wyndham by Request before you go. We got a free room ugrade on the top floor, where we had an ocean view (just beautiful) and ability to look over the resort action.

The rooms were standard, clean and comfortable. The TVs were large and had good cable channels. But we stayed outside most of the time anyway.

The waterpark was outstanding. There were plenty of out of the way places to lounge here. The river tubing area was tremendous, and the connectig pools were awesome. They know the score as the best outdoor bar was there.

People were so friendly - you and your kids can meet people from all over the East and Europe if you want. The activities staff treated our kids great. They were young and energetic. The wait staff and food were solid to above average. The food was cleanly prepared. The breakfast buffet was very good. Barbecue and jerk items were the best.

I don't agree with some reviewers who wrote that the staff was surly - 95% of the staff was cordial. It's like anything else in life; treat people with respect, show them a smile and a good word, and most times they'll hang with you, exchange small talk, give you good service.

The people in the indoor concessions at the hotel (they're not resort workers) on the other hand were surly and needed an attitude adjustment.

We were in the middle of the great blizzard and we had to stay two extra days before getting on a flight. The resort gave us the room for a distress rate @ 250. a night including the all-inclusive. That was classy.

Remember that you're in Jamaica, and life is slower, mon. So if you're "type A" and are prone to whining about the service not snapping to attention, you'll have to go somewhere else and pay more. On the other hand, it may be better for your health to take a lesson from the locals.

We are going back, and our kids can't wait.

Don't go if you are used to "wristband" all-inclusives. Visited: February 2003
Posted by lauratessmer
This review is mainly for people with children and people who are familiar with all-inclusives. For background, my children are four, six and eight, and we have traveled with them extensively and always stay at all-inclusives for the kids. We are positive people who make the most of our holidays.

On a positive note, we had a really good time. I was pleasantly surprised at the Jamaicans friendliness - 95% were helpful and polite.

The water park was good, but I thought it would be better and bigger. And I'm really not that hard to please. The kids spent a lot of time in the lazy river, which was not over their heads. We didn't have a problem getting the rafts, and we were there during President's Week.

The big water slide was fun and the small water slides were good for small children, as my eight-year-old got quite bored with them. It's a good idea to bring along a few small floaties to play with.

The food was pretty good. There were two excellent a-la-carte restaurants and the buffet. For lunch there was a beach restaurant and a pool snack bar. I found the food limited and not that good at the lunch restaurants.

There was also an indoor, overly air-conditioned restaurant, but it was the same food as the others. We spent all dinners except one at the buffet and did lunches at the pool or beach. I can't complain about the food. I've had better at all-inclusives and I've had worse.

The beach was lovely white sand and blue (though murky) water. However, if you love to take long walks on the beach, this was not the place for you as the beach was very, very small.

Here are the reasons why I wouldn't go back:

1) The payment cards were a pain in the butt! We are used to wristbands where everyone is on the all-inclusive and you walk up and order and walk away. With the card, there was a lot of waiting in lines for everything. I think you're crazy if you go there and do not do the all-inclusive. You would spend a fortune.

2) It was way too long of a flight coming from the west coast of Canada. It took us 17 hours straight to get there. If you are a family living in Western Canada and have small children, please go to Mexico (especially Playa del Carmen). I don't mean to disrespect the Jamaican people or culture, but the beaches and resorts are so similar, and Mexico is so much closer.

By the way, the beds were the best I have ever slept in. Feather pillows, too. They were really, really good. The hotel was built in the 70s and did look it, so don't be too picky.

People paid staff to put towels out for them on the chairs in the mornings, and after 7:00 am it was hard to find a spot. That was frustrating. All in all, it was a good place, but not if you're used to "wristband" all-inclusives.

Wyndham Rose Hall was awesome, with excellent golf. Visited: January 2003
Posted by mondino
It was our second time to Jamaica; and prior to selecting this island and the property, we had checked this web site for the reviews. Given the variability of the ratings ranging from excellent to downright poor, we skeptically selected the Wyndham Rose Hall.
Yet, how bad can poor be in ... Paradise?

We were not disappointed at all! Armed with pleanty of $1 bills and the platinum package (which included our golf for 6 days), we had a fabulous time over the New Year's holiday.

The golf was absolutely spectacular in all respects. We played the course on the property-Cinnamon Hill at Rose Hall, White Witch-The Ritz Carlton, Half Moon Bay, and Tyrall.

From my perspective (8 hcp), I would recommend playing only the first two. Half Moon and Tyrall were flat, relatively straight, with little challenge. Be ready to experience the revenge of the "Witch". It will devour you ...and many of your golf balls! It was definitely worth the $145 fee and caddie tip. The Cinnamon Hill course was less punishing and equally scenic as was the Witch....plus it was in the hotel package!

Clearly the property for the holiday was at 100% capacity until the 5th when it dropped to 60%. With all those guests, they managed to do a great job in the restaurants, cleanliness of the hotel and especially the activities.

There were tons of planned events for adults, and a kids club from the 24th of December until January 1st. New Year's Eve celebrations were pleantiful. And we chose the island buffet at the Sugar Mill (pool). We were rewarded with a very warm starry night (75 degrees), the best reggae band in Jamaica and excellent food.

We found the finest restaurant to be the Three Palms, located a ten-minute walk on the property (by the club house), or a two-minute golf cart ride. Their excellent cuisine and superior service complemented the already magical surroundings.

The two disappointng items were our very (very!) "tired" looking room and the purported beach...that was very tiny and, in certain areas (in my opinion), needed much attention due to erosion.

So, depending on your preference you can decide....those who only go to the beach should be in Negril...all others will have a ball at the Wyndham.

Room for Improvement Visited: January 2003
Posted by saabconv
I, unlike a lot of other reviewers, thought the best part of this "resort" was the service from the waiters, bartenders, tennis pros on down to the massage therapists. The rooms are Holiday Inn quality at best. You can hear the rooms next door as well as everybody on the floor slamming their doors shut. The elevator broke several times during our stay as well the television. The beach was fine as long as you got up at 7:30 in the morning to "save your chair". The ocean water was okay if you don't mind not seeing your feet below you. It’s very murky.

The water park was nice but you had to wait for somebody to hand over a raft - apparently a very hot commodity (much like the lounge chairs). Food is prepared the way the English used to cook, very bland, boring (and overpriced to boot). So, if I decide to go back to Montego Bay, I will stay at the Ritz.

This is a great place for families. Visited: January 2003
Posted by frsan
We spent our first trip to Jamaica at the Wyndham Resort and we were very happy with the experience.

The staff was excellent, the service, overall, was very good. Jamaicans were clearly very fun loving people, sometimes they just needed to be warmed up with a smile or a sincere hello.

We were not on the all-inclusive plan, so the food was pricy. But with a combination of simply not eating every meal and some of the free food and beverages available on certain special evenings, we came out ahead by being on the European Plan.

There were few alternative places to eat as the resort was somewhat isolated. It was located 7 miles east of Montego Bay via a terrible road, and the transportation by taxi was expensive e.g. $20 one way to the Montego Bay downtown.

Some restauraunts provided free transport. Come to think of it, it was really the lack of bus service and the high taxi prices that led us to venture forth only one evening.

There were virtually non-stop activites all day and evenings with some very interesting events. The best was "bonfire night" when a 20 foot teepee of wood was ignited. In the tropical setting set to music coming from a live band, it was almost surreal.

The pool areas were awesome, especially the Sugar Mills Falls area that had 4 waterslides; a large pool area; the wonderful "lazy river"; a great resteraunt, Mangoes; a swim-up bar and three hot-water pools. All of this was set in a shady prolific tropical garden environment that was well supervised by staff. The kids and the adults alone or together could ask for little more.

The beach area looked just okay, and was very rocky with just a narrow stretch of so-so beach. Go to Negril if you just must have a nice beach.

The Cinnamon Hill Golf Course was right next door. There was a free shuttle. Buy the 3 day package for best value. $275 pays for everything including cart and caddy. Johnny Cash is a part-owner and has a home on the course.

Overall, the resort was paradise for a family, maybe not so for adults only. I think that was the way it was purposely set up.

Stay for two weeks. Use the first week to stay at the resort and get oriented to the resort and to the local environment and the second to venture forth.

We are looking forward to going back soon.

This was a nice surprise. Visited: November 2002

Our flight was cancelled after staying at the Half Moon (5 star) and we were scared to go knowing it was rated lower. The rooms were completely average, but actually felt newer and cleaner than the Half Moon - like a Holiday Inn perhaps.

What I loved was the water park. We had our six-month-old with us and had a blast on the lazy river ride. The buffet was okay and the lower level restaurant was not all so clean. Also, the staff was completely unpredictable - sometimes amazing other times a bit rude.

There would be no way I would come here as a couple looking for romance, but for a family, it was perfect. If you don't mind a simple, clean room and food that's not amazing, but lots of fun activities and tons to do, this is the right place.

We had a wonderful vacation for our first time to Jamaica.

The water was beautiful, the people were extremely nice, the food was great and - of course - the drinks were good. Gregg, at the pool bar, was also our favorite, but they were all good. We left planning another trip to Jamaica as soon as we can.

Worst holiday ever Visited: August 2002

From start to finish we received nothing but rude, impolite, unfriendly staff. To say the service is slow is an understatement. Food was bad and never hot, and very little choice. We've traveled the Caribbean on many occasions and this is by far the worst holiday ever.
