This is the best deal around! Visited: May 2008

My wife and I had the pleasure of staying at Samsara for the fifth time.

It's always nice to see a familiar face, and it's even nicer to be recognized. As soon as I sat down at the bar, everyone was coming over saying hello and asking about my wife and kids. The people (other guests, employees, and security) are all friendly, helpful, and pleasant.

The hotel is a great value, and the new massage program they have is great!

We are already looking forward to the next trip!

Samsara offers an excellent value. Visited: April 2008

I love the pillar houses. We stayed in April and November 2008. The place was renovated over the winter of 2008. It now has a spa, larger balconies on pillar houses, and windows (not louvers). You can't beat the value here.

We stayed here four days and paid rock bottom prices. We opted out of the all-inclusive, which was a good call because the hotel food was mediocre at best.

Pros: The location was awesome, and was very close to some amazing (and cheap) local eateries. The hotel provided shuttles to the beach each day. It was far enough away from the beach so we weren't completly hounded when we stepped out the door.

The room was huge, not brand new, but decently clean. The view was gorgeous.

The staff was mostly friendly and helpful.

One strange thing: They claimed to be at full capacity, but the place seemed empty except for a few other couples.

Samsara was horrible! Visited: July 2007

Do not stay here - whatever you do! This was more than a bad experience, it was filthy and nasty.

There were bed bugs, and I found pubic hairs in my sheets! In addition, they did not like to give out extra towels!

It was just horrible!

While at Samsara, we received a clean room, good service, and a lot of helpful information (and smiles).

We plan to go back this March.

Samsara Hotel offered essential amenities and had a great staff. Visited: April 2005

We will be returning again in May. We would not even consider staying elsewhere. The rooms were nice, clean, the air-conditioning worked, and the balcony was great. The overall establishment was in a perfect central location on the cliffs with an outstanding view.

With all of the money we saved, we were able to walk (or cab) to all of the five star restaurants, tours, boat rides, etc. We don't come to Jamaica to sit in our room!

The staff and bartenders were sweet and accommodating. If you want to make the most out of the cliff location, don't forget to pack some rafts or noodles and snorkle gear. The dive shop even blew up our rafts! One morning we even recorded an octopus climb out of the water and up the side of the cliff!

In addition, the breakfast buffet was great, and was a perfect way to start the day.

A great effort has been made on improvements. Visited: February 2004
Posted by bkrueger
I have just returned from a stay at Samsara and leave a four star rating for the great effort the staff has made for improvements.

There is a somewhat larger lobby, a newly added sun-deck/stage next to the bar, a larger pool, some fixed sea ladders and water slide, new paint and many cosmetic detail upgrades throughout the hotel exterior and bar area, inclusion of TVs in the rooms, and a friendlier staff. Plus, many minor items too long to list.

But remember, this is a budget hotel and don't expect the quality of a more upscale establishment. There are still some items that would turn my one-week stay to two weeks. It is hard to rest well on inferior mattresses and pillows that feel like a bag of cement.

But, it appears the owners have listened to past comments and I will return again. I commend everyone.

The Samsara provided a good view of the evening sunsets and a quiet atmosphere. As for the rooms, make sure you request one with an AC. The food was unimaginable, but we ate across the street at Choices.

This was the best. Visited: July 2003

I was shocked when I read some of the reviews for Samsara. This was my first time and my husband's second.

The rooms were not fancy, but how much time do you spend in your room? I had a wonderful time and the staff was just awesome. We didn't do the all-inclusive because it was a waste. But the food we did eat at Samsara was excellent.

We will never stay any where else in Jamaica. The views at Samsara were amazing! Thanks to all the staff - especially Ron! See you soon!

Average. Visited: January 2003

The only disappointment during our vacation was our accommodations. Relatives in the U.S. tried to reach us at the hotel two days after we arrived and were told by the staff that we never checked in. On rainy days we were stuck in the room, with only a bed and a TV. We chose the all-inclusive plan and enjoyed the food. We enjoyed the free shuttle to Legends, the sister hotel. Scuba diving was on-site and wonderful! The overall experience was average, but I would not stay there a second time.

Affordable but not classy. Visited: December 2002

I've been going to Jamaica for 30 years, half of which to Negril. Don't expect much at Samsara. The beds are crappy and I try not to eat there if at all possible.

Whenever anything at the hotel is broken or old, it never seems to get fixed. The saltwater pools, the seawall lights, the ladders into the ocean, the slide, the list goes on and on. It seems the owners have forgotten Samsara and have concentrated on their bar, Legends.

Happy hour is the best time, but none of the bartenders know how to smile (nor does the front desk receptionist). The nicest people at the hotel are the housekeepers.

If you're on a budget, Samsara is located near some fun restaurants and bars. You can walk up and down the West End day or night, so there's plenty to do in the area. The cliffs have privacy and the water is clear for swimming. But, be cautious where you stay. I've stayed at Samsara many times, but go with an open mind. It's affordable, but not classy.

The view was the only asset. Visited: December 2002

Between the attitude of most of the staff and lack of response from management, I would not recommend this hotel. The view was fantastic but the all-inclusive package was a waste of money. The food selection was very poor and we were confined to eating only at certain hours. The grounds were a mess, although they were under construction. The rooms are just basic sleeping rooms but at least clean. Nudity and conduct of adults and children was unadvertised, unexpected, and offensive. It took three days for management to address the problem.

For the money, this is a great deal! Visited: January 2002

We stayed in a pillar house, which was a great experience. The stone built showers were awesome! Samsara had a fantastic view, and the food we had was great.

I will never forget Rose and Violet, two of the happiest and nicest Jamaican (sisters) and bartenders on the island!

We stayed at several different places between Montego Bay and Negril. Samsara was definitely the most memorable. For the money, it can't be beat!

Just up the street, you can do plenty of shopping from real Jamaicans. I got pretty fed up with the tons of stores in Jamaica, which were owned and operated by about every other nationality in the world.

I would definitely do it again. Visited: August 2001

We stayed in a Pilar House. It was an octagonal room perched on top of a big concrete pilar. It overlooked the rocks and the sun bathing deck at Samsara. It was not overly crowded, which added to the peaceful atmosphere we were looking to enjoy.

I would definitely avoid the all-inclusive packages. There were great local places to eat very close by. The staff was very accommodating. As far as air conditioning was concerned, it was not necessary in the Pilar House.

The only thing I would take with me is a small coffee maker to have in the room and a small cooler to keep plenty of Red Stripe cold all day. I found myself rising with the sun and going to bed with the sunset (which was as beautifull as I have seen anywhere).

It was all right Visited: June 2001

If you're looking for somewhere to rest with a somewhat secluded and peaceful atmosphere, this is the place.

You definitely need an air-conditioned room. There are no phones, clocks or TV’s in the rooms. To make a phone call, front desk will have to connect you from an area in the lobby. But you shouldn’t need to make calls from your room anyway; that's a waste of good money.

The good thing is that they have a shuttle that takes you to their sister hotel on the beach if you want a little action.

There's a nice restaurant right across the street (Choices) for some real Jamaican food. The hotel's menu is catered to Europeans and Americans. Don’t expect to have any genuine Jamaican dishes.

If you're looking for genuine Jamaican food, don’t get the all-inclusive package. It’s not an action spot at all. Keep in mind, I didn’t go during Spring Break time. It was all right—a real countryside peaceful atmosphere just to cool out.

The rooms are small and nothing luxurious. I believe it is owned by French Canadians.

Best vacation I've had in a long time. Visited: June 2000
Posted by tantan364
Our vacation in Jamaica was the best vacation I’ve had in a long time. We went as a group of four females, not knowing what to expect because of the cheap rate we received. We were pleasantly surprised with our accommodations.

We originally reserved a non-air-conditioned room and quickly upgraded to a room with air. Other than that, I found Hotel Samsara to be a breath of fresh air. The scenery was unreal, the staff was accommodating, the trips to and from Legends on the Beach were fun and the food was very good.

The only negatives were the air conditioning wasn't that great and there wasn't a TV in the room, although we were on vacation. Also, be prepared with the proper calling card for telephone calls. My calls to the States cost as much as the trip.

I would definitely stay at Hotel Samsara again and hope to do so next June.

Unique, Cozy, and Affordable Visited: November 1999

My husband's family lives in Jamaica. I have stayed at the Samsara many times over the years. The Samsara is not fancy, but it is completely adequate and comfy. The gardenview rooms are large in size, with tile floors, and huge fans. If you can do without air, the garden view rooms are perfect. If you need air get a room on the ocean side of the resort.

Remember, come to Jamaica for the atmosphere, people, and beautiful scenery. These things are what makes Jamaica unique and such a special experience.
