This is a five-star resort! Visited: July 2008
Posted by crysteena
My husband and I visited this resort last week to celebrate our honeymoon. I have stayed at many different resorts in the Caribbean, and I have to say this is the best resort I have ever stayed at.

I was extremely impressed with the staff. Everyone we dealt with was so friendly and helpful. We were very well taken care of. Every request we had was addressed immediately. The staff was extremely competent.

The resort was very well maintained. The landscaping was gorgeous, and the pools were beautiful. The rooms were a good size and very clean. The maids put fresh flowers in our room every day, too.

The food was fantastic. They had many different restaurants, and each one featured a different ethnic cuisine. We ate at a different restaurant every night, and we always left satisfied. We found La Pagoda to be our favorite - although it was very hard to choose.

There were so many different bars and lounges at which to have a drink. Many places had couches to just sit and relax on. This resort had such a laid back atmosphere. At night, there was always something to do - whether it be a show, the casino, or a beach party.

The beach was beautiful and clean. There were plenty of chaise lounges, so we never had a problem finding a chair.

This resort had everything you would ever need for a vacation. For the seven days we were here, my husband and I never left the resort - there was no need to!

I highly recommend this resort for your next vacation!

This seemed like a prison compound for women, with creepy security staff. Visited: September 2007

Let me start by saying that the grounds were the most beautiful and intricately manicured, the rooms were amazingly furnished with high end furniture, and bathrooms were lovely with marble and glass. All that rates a total five-star resort. It was one the the best I've visited in my very extensive travels around the world.

However, as far as the security personnel went - they were like prison guards! My husband was down with the "rum flu" one evening. I let him to sleep it off, and went to take the trolley into the main restaurant area to find a meal.

On my wait for the trolley, I was approached by two of the security personnel and was questioned about where I was going, where was my husband, and how late was I staying out. It was a very, very uncomfortable encounter. I was quite shaken.

The trolley came, and I went ahead with my plans. On my return home, the same thing happened. Now, I don't mind people inquiring whether or not I need help when I'm in a resort that commands more than $600 per night, but being questioned about my plans...no!

One afternoon, during a nap, a security guard helped himself into my room to view the pool area from my balcony. When it was reported (and after confirming with my husband!), the management said they could determine who he was, and take care of it. That was the last I heard. They never got back to me. It was very violating, and very creepy.

I will never stay in this or any other Melia resort - ever! I will relate this problem to every travel blog out there!

We enjoyed it! Visited: July 2007

This was probably the most enjoyable place we stayed in recent years.

There were two sides to the resort, the Tropical side and the Carib side. We stayed at the Carib side. This was an older resort (maybe ten + years - just a guess), but it was well looked after.

The beach and pool were great and fun. Bring your family here. If you like beaches and pools, you'll probably like it here.

There was no supermarket nearby, so I don't know why the rooms come with kitchens. You're going to stay on site, and probably not leave until you head back to the airport.

Go with the all-inclusive meal plan. It was worth it. We were very impressed with the restaurants. There were several of them, and all were good (except the American Steakhouse - you can skip that one - nothing special there).

An upgraded resort was next door and within walking distance (Paradisus Palma Real). Take a trip over there a look around. The Melia Caribe Tropical was a three-star resort, and the Paradisus was a four-star (maybe five) resort. The restaurants in the Caribe Tropical were four-star.

One bad thing was that we got hasseled on the beach by vendors. Some actually yelled at us if we didn't buy what they were selling (like Cuban cigars). Hopefully, the hotel got rid of these people.

Other then that, it was great! We would go back.

I thought it was very nice here. Everyone was friendly, and there was always something to do, whethere it was water sports or other activities.

Also, there were a lot of restaurants ans shows. It was a nice place for guests of all ages and tastes.

We thought this was a great place to stay! Visited: January 2006

We found the resort to be beautifully landscaped. The staff was friendly enough, but it was hard to commuicate with them at times, as many did not speak English well.

The food was very good. The service was slow at times, but what can you expect when you're in the Caribbean?

The beach was nice, and the sand was as fine as flour. The entertainment was good enough, and the sports bar was fun.

Bring comfy shoes, as you'll be doing a lot of walking since the resort is so big. Overall, this resort was beautiful and well worth a visit. We plan on returning next year.

This resort is a lush, tropical paradise. Visited: September 2005

We are just back from a one-week stay at the Melia Caribe Tropical Resort. We booked two days prior to departure, and were prepared for any disappointments. To our pleasant surprise, this resort was everything and more than we had ever hoped for.

The airport was lovely and very expedient. We arrived at the hotel and checked in without incident. Our room was very large and clean, and was located two minutes away from the amazing pool - and just steps away from the beach.

After a day or so of exploring, we discovered how to get around using the train and walking paths. Warning: the concrete paths give off and reflect immense heat during high noon, I would advise anyone to forego the walking at that time of day and enjoy the breezy ten-minute train ride when going back and forth from lunch - you will burn!

Stick to breakfast and lunch at the Gondola instead of the beach grill - unless you go early. Remember, the buffet by the beach is not fully enclosed, therefore it will be warmer and there will be a few bothersome flies trying to get at your dinnerplate. But what else would you expect by the beach?

The a la carte restaurants were romantic and beautiful, and the menus were quite good. The Mexican and the seafood restaurants were amazing. The American Grill was not what we were expecting, but the atmosphere was nice.

Each evening there was a show, and it was not half bad. Then there was the live music at the lobby bar until midnight. It was fantastic, and we really enjoyed the vibe. Just get up and dance!

The pool was breathtaking. The sand at the beach was as soft as powder. The water was nice, but was so much clearer and calmer in the early a.m. I lost my shades, but found them soon after at the bottom. It was that clear and calm.

The staff was so friendly and hard working. The entertainment guys were especially fun, and the housekeepers were very sweet. The resort seemed to cater to many different countries - especially Latin America and Europe. Try to learn at least the basics in Spanish and you will feel better.

When we were here, English speaking was definitely the minority, and we are just not used to that. Just adjust to it, and if you speak any French, you will be fine.

We definitely would return to this place and cannot say enough about the resort. Also, at the time we were here, the Tropical side of the resort was closed due to the "slow season". This did not affect us at all. In fact, we prefer a place when it's a little less crowded. It is probably wild with tourists when both sides of the resort are in full swing. We would highly recommend this time of the year.

Tip: avoid keeping the A/C too high, or you will end up with a cold like me from the extremes in temp. Also, ladies, bring a nice fan for the evenings.

Melia Caribe Tropical is a good resort (provided you get the good room). Visited: November 2004
Posted by nicolasraffin
This was our fourth trip to Punta Cana. We stayed at Melia Caribe last week of December 2004

* Good points :
- very nice resort, a lot of space (it was huge!), fantastic gardens, good restaurants and variety, very nice buildings (especially reception), great pool and beach, and it was all very clean.

* Bad points :
- a noisy resort : many scooters/minitrucks that the staff used to travel round this huge resort, noisy rooms (do ask a first floor!)
- quite bad service : not a five-star standard, people seemed far less friendly than in other resorts we have visited. They seemed to be expecting tips to smile.

A Special Warning:

The hotel is currently building a huge new wing, which caused a lot of noise in all the Caribe part, beach and pool included. And workers started at 7:00 a.m, and ended at 10:00 p.m. Room advisory : as a result, during check-in, do make sure you are not given a room in bungalow 41 to 45 or 31 to 36. Rather, ask for one in bungalows 7 to 16 or 24 to 30.

Enjoy your stay!

I wouldn't recommend Melia Caribe Tropical. Visited: November 1999

I would not ever come here. They overbooked, and when I arrived at the hotel they did not have a room for me. I had made the reservations in October (for a February stay).

I was not the only person that this happened to. There was a family with a six-month-old baby who did not have a room!

I will never stay at this hotel!
