It was a nice island, but awful service. Visited: May 2006 |

My husband and I just spent a portion of our honeymoon at Peter Island Resort. I have always wanted to go to Peter Island as I have always read and heard great things about it.
The island itself was great, with beautiful beaches and views. We stayed in a junior beachfront suite - which was adequate. The bathroom with the double shower and Jacuzzi tub was a treat - as was the private hammock right outside of our patio. The decor could use some updating, especially the bedding.
The problem was the service was absolutely awful! I can count on less than one hand the number of staff that were pleasant to us. The majority seemed to act as if they were doing us a favor by doing their job - no matter if it was getting us a drink at the bar; taking our lunch/dinner order; or helping us at the water sport desk. Even the front lobby staff was dismal to say the least. It truly was very disappointing.
The spa was fabulous, the food very good - especially at the Deadman's beach restaurant. The sunset trip above White Bay Beach was fantastic.
This resort could easily live up to its five-star rating with some management changes. Until then, I wouldn't return nor reccommend it. There are many other resorts at the same price point that are far superior. |

A week at the Peter Island Resort is almost like having your own private island.
The facilities and staff are excellent. The spa is especially good. A wide variety of activities are available. The guests are spread out over the island, so frequently there is no one else at the pool or on the beach.
The food and entertainment in the restaurant make for a delightful combination. A week at Peter Island is expensive - but worth it. |

This was a great destination; but we got poor service and food. Visited: December 2005 |

We loved the island and its beautiful beaches. There was lots of privacy, and we never had the feel that the resort was crowded. The views were great, too. We felt like we were on our own private island.
One would expect, however, that the week before Christmas, the staff would be ready to rock and roll for the pickiest of guests. (We are very easy to please.)
The service, aside from a few key staff, was lousy. We had to make repeated requests for re-stocking of our in-room fridge, beach towels (delivered only one day to our room the entire week), and endured long waits for checks at meals, along with screwed up orders.
The island itself was magnificent, and the facilities were good. The truly bad service overshadowed that. The lunch menu never changed the entire seven days we were here. It was boring and not worth the hefty price for the "inclusive" stay! Dinner was good but not over the top...and certainly not memorable.
I would recommend the lower rooms -- they were larger and had vaulted ceilings. Be warned about noisy upstairs neighbors, though. Insulation did not block out the noise. (We were awakened several nights at 3:00 am by a partying crowd up top!)
The bathrooms were gross and in major, major need of renovation -- it was definitely not five-star quality. They were very small and looked ancient. Brown water ran through the pipes on several mornings. The beds were lumpy and in need of a change, and the sheets I've seen at K-Mart were better than these. They were scratchy and dingy.
The spa was magnificent and our massage was terrific, but very expensive. After a 5:00 pm service, the locker room was strewn with dirty towels and was filthy beyond words. I couldn't shower in those conditions. Also, there was only one vanity, so if you need to prep for dinner, do it in your room because there's only space for one guest at the mirror!
One afternoon we were literally removed from our lounge chairs on the beach by visiting yacht goers. While lunching beachside, they moved our chairs (with our stuff on them) and overtook our spot on the beach by the hammocks.
Bring your own raquet and balls if you plan to play tennis. The resort's equipment was broken and unusable. The courts weren't great either.
We had a great trip overall -- we met fun people and left our kids at home. It was a much-needed vacation. |

My husband and I returned in early June from our one-week stay at Peter Island Resort.
In all fairness, I must say I am a travel agent who specializes in luxury travel and have had the pleasure of traveling to many islands and resorts. Without hesitation, I can say Peter Island is one of the nicest resorts we have stayed at.
Our oceanview room was so lovely; nice king sized bed with a night stand and lamp on each side of the bed, great sitting area for reading books and the wonderful outdoor patio with a view of the pool, gardens and ocean!
The beaches here were magnificent with lots of room for privacy, great snorkeling, nice thatch roof areas to get out of the sun. The food was very good and plentiful for every meal. It was all presented in a lovely way, and the service was impeccable.
If you want a party crowd with nonstop activities, this isn't the place for you. If you want to get back to nature in a beautiful tropical setting to spend time with the one you love, come to Peter Island Resort. |

We spent a week in Paradise! Visited: September 2004 |

My wife and I recently spent a week at Peter Island for our honeymoon. The trip was absolutely amazing and we were so sad when it came time to go home.
The beachfront room we stayed in was fantastic. It was right on the beach, with very nice décor, a sitting area, a fridge (stocked with some free drinks), and a king-size bed. Much to my wife’s delight, the bathroom was huge and had double sinks, double showers and a two-person Jacuzzi. No TV, but that’s the way we wanted it.
The island itself was quite beautiful. It was very hilly, but some of the views from the hills were really spectacular. All of the beaches and grounds were extremely well kept.
The staff told us that there were only about 25-30 people there while we were there, so it was virtually deserted and very private. One afternoon we had them drive us over to White Bay and we literally had the entire beach to ourselves. We enjoyed sailing the Hobie Cats, kayaking, exploring the island, and just relaxing on the beach all week.
We have never eaten so much good food in our lives. We liked having two restaurants (the beachfront grill and Tradewinds, the formal dining room) so that dinner was different every night.
They also gave guests the option of having the meal delivered to you in your room or anywhere on the beach as a picnic for no extra charge. I had raved to one of the waiters we befriended about how much I loved the Peter Island cookies, so when he delivered our breakfast to our room on the morning we left, he brought me 25 cookies all wrapped up to take home with us.
For the most part, the staff was outstanding. The people were very friendly and it seemed that they were willing to do anything they could to accommodate us. My wife wanted to have dinner on the beach on Saturday night, so they set up a table for us and gave us our own private waitress. The little things like that just made the trip so perfect.
The few negatives we experienced barely merit mentioning. With the new villas that were being built, there was a good bit of construction going on, but we hardly noticed it because it was not taking place near the rooms. My wife was a little disappointed that the new spa wasn’t open yet as well.
All in all, my wife and I both agreed that this was the best vacation we’ve ever been on. We would recommend Peter Island to anyone looking for a first-class place to relax and enjoy themselves with their spouse or significant other. |

We want to return - it was heaven! Visited: April 2004 |

My husband and I stayed at the Peter Island Resort in April 2004.
The beaches were gorgeous, and the palm trees provided enough shade so that the umbrella huts were not necessary. The double hammocks were very relaxing and several were available.
The food was excellent. Our first night was the manager's cocktail reception and a Caribbean buffet, followed by entertainment. Everything was wonderful. Breakfasts were great- try the banana pancakes.
We ran into a couple from Columbus, Ohio, that we met on the ferry from Tortola at the beginning of our trip, and the wife said to me " If this isn't heaven, I don't know what is." My feelings, exactly. It's worth the splurge. |

It was nice, but not the best. Visited: April 2004 |

My husband and I celebrated our anniversary here in April. It was very difficult to get to from the east coast, (two planes and a boat), but the islands were beautiful. It had a very European feel to it.
The room was average at best. For the money, it would have been nice to have spa quality soap, etc. Our room was small and the bathroom was not the cleanest (tile was dirty). We loved our second floor balcony, though.
The food, drink and staff were all wonderful! I think management had a talk with them, because the reviews suggest this.
The island was very rugged, and the beaches were nice, but not as beautiful as Turks and Caicos or Mexico - more like Florida.
Also, the spa was still not open, so that took a lot away. Also, the gym was a shoe box.
All in all, the nights were wonderful and there were no bugs, so that was a plus! I would recommend it, but it's not a five-star quality resort. |

It was everything we expected - and more! Visited: March 2004 |

We just returned from Peter Island, March 28, 2004. Our experience (family of four, with two boys - 18 and 14) met and exceeded all expectations.
We found the entire staff to be exceptionally friendly and helpful. The general manager, Jeff Humes, was very visible and approachable and was around just about everywhere. He made a point of meeting the guests and asking what he could do for us. You will enjoy meeting Jeff if you stay here.
The grounds were immaculately maintained. Our room was ready when we arrived early and it was exactly what we requested – ground floor Beach Front Jr. Suite. The room was clean, quiet, private and just as presented on their web site.
The food was excellent. Two different restaurants afforded a nice variety.
We found the front desk to be exceptionally helpful and friendl. Our requests were always promptly and courteously addressed. The spa and villa construction, at least the heavy part, was completed. What is left to do was far enough away that we never heard anything.
We experienced two issues during our stay… water system went down twice for a number of hours, and the dial tone in our room did not work for several days. These issues should not be a problem for future guests. We were well satisfied with the way the resort staff handled things.
Diving: We went out four times with the good folks at Paradise Water Sports. Diving with them was so easy. Drop off your gear at the dive shop and they take care of it from there – cleaning, drying and storing it all on your return to the dock. Our dives included two night dives… one on the Rhone. Do this if you can!
I would offer a few suggestions:
1) look into Andrew Harper's Q Club membership as a means of saving on your room rate. It saved us over $500.
2) If you have a late arrival, consider staying in Road Town instead of going straight to Peter Island. We arrived at 11 pm. And stayed at Maria's by the Sea and took the Peter Island ferry over mid morning. This saved us $1000 plus.
3) If you do go to Road Town, consider buying some provisions for your room. Food is free, beverages are not, to guests on Peter Island. Your own stash affords you some convenience. Our room had a refrigerator which was pre-stocked with a couple of complimentary sodas and beers. And;
4) as you read other reviews, be sure to note when they actually stayed on the island. The more recent the experience, the more relevant it is. |

This was the best place I have visited - I will go back within two years! Visited: July 2003 |

I searched the internet for over 30 destinations. I wanted to pick the perfect place. I ran across ... and read every page... literally. I kept the destination a secret until we were on the yacht from Tortola.
The staff took us and our bags in a modified golf cart to our rooms so we did not have to walk. We stayed in the beachfront suites (room 203). They were well worth the extra money! When we walked in, and my wife saw the room with the great view of Deadman's Beach, tears of joy came upon her face! I knew then I had chosen the right place for our honeymoon.
Moments later a bellman knocked on the door with a bottle of complimentary champagne, already on ice, and congratulated us on our wedding.
The island was peaceful, especially a night. The beachfront rooms were nice and spacious. The food was great and there was plenty of it. The watersports offerings were plentiful and the staff taught us everything.
The beaches were cleaned of sea grass every morning by a tractor pulling some sort of rake to remove sea grass that washed up. The beaches were not crowded except a couple times some boaters who visited the marina brought kids. We just moved closer to the beachfront rooms and away from the beach grill, or went to White Bay Beach.
The concierge was always helpful and courteous except they did not supply much information on island excursions. There was some construction going on for the renovation of Crows Nest and Hawks Nest (the condos) along with the new spa. I was really surprised at how little we actually heard them. They did not bother us as much as the boaters' kids those two days. Also, diving was great and the dive "guide" was great.
What they did right - The atmosphere (except for the boaters' kids) nice beaches, lots of activities (none for kids, so don't bring them!), great food, island and sunset tours, decor in rooms, and room service. Also, the wine dinner was awesome and worth the money.
What they could improve upon - I know there are no private beaches in the BVI, but more could be done to control some of the boaters who visit and restrict their use, charge them more or something.
Also, the service in the restaurants was some of the worse I had during the week. But on Friday and Saturday it was some of the best. The restaurant staff seemed to be on "island time". |

We had a honeymoon in absolute heaven! Visited: July 2003 |

My husband and I stayed at Peter Island Resort for our honeymoon in July.
We were scheduled to arrive around sunset, but didn't get there until 10:00 p.m. that evening due to poor flight scheduling in San Juan. Nonetheless, the staff was waiting at the dock when we arrived on Tortola (they even had a smile!).
Since it was after dinner hours at the restaurant, we assumed they would be closed and we could dine on the snacks we brought with us. But to our surprise, they picked us up via golf cart and took us to the restaurant where they served us a full course meal. Try the crab cakes (even if they aren't on the menu, ask for them because they are to die for!). The wait staff was incredible. They were very polite and accommodating - especially Jenifer.
The entire week was filled with tons of extras...they really went above and beyond to make sure we were pampered.
Since we didn't plan on spending a lot of time indoors, we opted for the oceanview room to save a little money. Even though there were four rooms per building, two of the four weren't occupied while we were here. It seemed as if the entire building was ours.
The snorkeling was incredible...make sure you spend a day at White Bay Beach and have them deliver a picnic lunch to you or take a day trip to Virgin Gorda and head to the Baths.
We stayed busy from sun up to sun down every day because there was so much to do on the island...of course, if you choose you can do nothing at all!
The only complaint we had was that the front desk staff wasn't friendly and helpful, but we overlooked it because the other staff made up for it.
We had an amazing time and can't wait to visit again! |

Needs a lesson in service! Visited: July 2003 |

My girlfriend and I were looking for a first-class resort in the Caribbean. After many long hours on the Internet we discovered Peter Island Resort (PIR), which seem to fit the requirements.
After spending a week in one of the beachfront suites the following are my comments:
We were there at the wrong time! PIR is in the process of doing major construction on the island (adding a new spa, new villa and remodeling existing villas). On several mornings we were awaken at 7:30am by the sounds of the big truck coming and going. It was hard to find a place to relax where there was no construction noise.
The second thing that was a problem was the service! It is hard to believe a resort of this class would have untrained island workers as the staff. There were some exceptions; Michael and Merick were first rate! My bill had 6 double charges on it, and the staff at the front desk was just plain rude.
The food was wonderful, and the snorkeling was majestic! The resort was not worth the price. |

Do not believe the hype! I found this resort absolutely not world-class, grade A, top notch, or anything of the sort.
Like many others, my wife and I came here for our honeymoon. Also like many others, we experienced a major booking gaffe. We had booked a beachfront suite, and they put us in the far inferior ocean view room!
My stomach sank through the floor when I saw the utterly medicore, Motel 6 quality accommodations in the oceanview rooms, complete with paint-splattered window screens, a leaky toilet and sink, and ratty towels.
I had to show them my confirmation email to prove that I had booked a beachfront suite. And they finally managed, grumpily and after much insisting, to get us into one for five of our seven nights (we had to move back for our last night).
In fairness, the beachfront suites were quite nice. The staff, with a few exceptions, was rude. Everyone there seemed miserable.
The reviewers who indicated they loved the food - I don't know what they were talking about. The food was a joke. Seriously. I'm talking Bird's Eye frozen vegetable medley and a crab cake dry as a hockey puck. It was horrible.
My wife and I entertained ourselves largely by laughing at the endless string of shortcomings, (did I mention the loud power plant directly adjacent to the resort's central pool/patio area?) as it was the only way to avoid crying.
As others have noted, the construction was a major nuisance, with loud trucks rolling across the island all day.
Oh, the island was beautiful, though. Deadman's Beach was very lovely, especially at night. However, I suggest you do not stay here. I am not a party pooper, I am trying to save other people from a miserable week! Go anywhere else, please. |

This was the absolute ideal vacation! Visited: June 2003 |

We stayed here for our honeymoon after getting married in St. John. We could not have asked for a more ideal vacation spot, it was the perfect combination of privacy and seclusion, but with enough activity to keep you as busy or not busy as you wanted to be!
The food was some of the best we have ever had. We live in New York City and love to eat, so we have been to a lot of great restaurants. It was one amazing meal after the next.
You cannot beat the atmosphere and accommodations at Peter Island. The beachfront suite was decorated how I would want to decorate my home, beautiful fabrics and furniture, hardwood ceilings, stone walls, ceramic tile floors, etc. It felt more like a home than a hotel room.
The service was impeccable. We never saw a maid, but our room was cleaned twice a day, and they would find out when you were out of your room for dinner and come turn down your bed. We got so much attention because the resort was small, but the service was not in-our-face.
If you wanted to get dropped off at a secluded beach, have a private tour, or be driven to the highest spot on the island for sunset complete with wine and cheese, they will do it for you! You could even have them pack a full lunch for you if you are off on a day trip.
You could hike all over the island, ride bikes, read a book in the hammock in front of your beachfront room, or get a great massage at the spa.
The resort was small enough to get personalized service, but big enough that it did not feel like the "twilight zone". We met three or four other couples our age who we ate with, watched sunsets with, and had cocktails with. Almost every night there was either a steel drum band, saxophonist, or other entertainment. Never mind the beautiful grounds, one gorgeous flower after the next. We would go back in a heartbeat, we loved Peter Island! |

My husband and I have traveled to many leading resorts in the Caribbean and Hawaii including the Ritz Carlton St. Thomas and Kapalua, Renaissance hotels - many ,Westin, Ocean Club, Couples Negril, Cape Santa Maria to name a few. There is no doubt in our mind that Peter Island was the best overall.
The beach was fabulous with perfect white sand and quiet lapping waves. Our room (a beachfront suite) was lovely, and the food was excellent.
We highly recommend the sunset trip and did it a couple of times during our week-long stay. Snorkeling was also quite good directly in front of the beachfront suites. If you like peace and beautiful beaches then this is the place for you.
For the record, we did not think that the service at the restaurant was as outstanding as everything else. It seemed like we had to wait every night for someone to finally bring us a drink. This was not a big deal, but worth noting at these prices. |

Our wedding reception in Atlanta ended around midnight on Saturday. By Sunday afternoon we were on the beach at the beautiful Peter Island Resort. We could not have asked for a better transition from the hectic pace of a wedding weekend to the relaxing calm of Peter Island.
Peter Island was the perfect place for our honeymoon. It combined the atmosphere and attention to detail of a small resort with the breadth of activities and amenities you would expect to find in a large vacation property.
The natural beauty of the island was unique. Peter Island was unspoiled by any development that was not part of the resort. In that way, it was quite different from other resorts on Virgin Gorda. Take our word for it - - we went on the day trip to Virgin Gorda - -the two islands were quite different.
The food was generally excellent. We ate lunches at Deadman's Beach and had almost all dinners at Tradewinds. The menu seemed to have a wide variety and the wine list was extensive. Breakfast did get a little repetitive, however. All in all, we were very satisfied with the cuisine.
We highly recommend a sunset trip to the Loop. We also recommend a trip to White Bay. It was a very private beach and was truly beautiful. One great feature of Peter Island was that the staff was very accommodating to our requests. We were amazed at how easy it was to get a ride from the staff anywhere on the island.
We stayed in the beachfront suite (#216) and strongly recommend the room. The view was fantastic and the bathroom was superb. Our only concern was that we had a door in our room that adjoined the room next door.
Finally, because Peter Island was small, we inevitably saw the same guests throughout our stay (although there was plenty of room to be by ourselves if we chose.) We enjoyed meeting other guests and felt like the friendships we developed while dining with new friends added a lot to our overall enjoyment.
Peter Island was expensive and somewhat difficult to get to, but it was well worth the time and expense. We highly recommend it for anyone looking for good food, new friends, peace and relaxation. |

My husband and I stayed five nights at both Peter Island Resort and Curtain Bluff on Antigua. Curtain Bluff was supposed to be one of the finest resorts in the entire Caribbean, but to our surprise, we were much more impressed with Peter Island.
First, the resort was beautiful with palm trees and flowering shrubs everywhere. The grounds were absolutely gorgeous. We stayed in one of the beachfront suites and it was great.
The bathroom was done all in stone with a large walk-in shower with two shower heads and a whirlpool bath for two. The shower/tub area was totally open with glass all around so you could see out. But don't worry, the windows were all tinted, so no one could see in. There was a large hammock right off of our patio.
The food was first rate. We were expecting Curtain Bluff to have better food than Peter Island, but Peter Island's food far surpassed Curtain Bluff's. We never had a bad meal. The Saturday night buffet was amazing.
The beach was perfect. Soft, powdery white sand with palm trees and thatched roof umbrellas. The swimming was great. There was a lot to do if you wanted or you could just lay on the beach. Twice a week they had a day trip to St. Thomas. Once a week they had one to Virgin Gorda.
Every day there were several ferries going to Road Town on Tortola. We took the island tour and found it very interesting and beautiful. One day we went to Reef Bay and looked for seashells, another day we went to White Bay and snorkeled. There was also hiking or bike riding.
One of the best things about Peter Island Resort was Benji. He was the Conceirge. He's been at the resort since it first opened. If you go, make sure you buy his book. It was very interesting.
The only problem we had our entire stay was the phone in our room did not work for the first three days, which made it somewhat inconvienent to take advantage of the services offered. Finally, Benji got it fixed for us. The front desk could also work a little harder on their communication skills with the other staff. They forgot to send our pick-up rides a few times.
But, overall, Peter Island was a wonderful resort - I would say one of the best. I would definitely return without hesitation. |

Truly a wonderful island with top-notch service and staff. Benji will take care of every detail to make your stay truly memorable.
Ignore the negative postings. If you want limbo contests and to hear "Pretty lady, bead your hair?" you've come to the wrong place.
Yes, there was no TV, no Internet, and no cell phones or pagers going off. There was plenty of secluded beaches to have a private picnic on. Don't pass up the sunset on the overlook. Get a bottle of wine and relax.
The food ranged from good to outstanding. An effort to improve the wine list was noticeable (even during the summer season).
The only thing that needed attention is being taken care of--that being updating the beachfront rooms.
Peter Island provided us with a perfect honeymoon. |
