Regional and international boats flock to the island of Jost Van Dyke every year for Foxy's Wooden Boat Regatta. In this small corner of paradise, wooden boats compete to rule the waves in an age where fibreglass and speed dominate.
The regatta attracts around 30 to 50 boats every year, as well as hundreds of visitors who escape to the islands for sun, sea, entertainment and good West Indian cuisine.
The event, held on Memorial Day weekend, was started by local Foxy Callwood in order to allow owners of wooden boats to have a race all to themselves. It has also gone a long way to preserve the tradition of building wooden boats, particularly since many have been destroyed by hurricanes within the last ten years.
The action kicks off with a welcome party on Friday night. On Saturday morning the competition begins with a race from Great Harbour on Jost Van Dyke to Cane Garden Bay, Tortola, the largest of the Virgin Islands. The fun continues there with crab races and more entertainment. A night of pure fun is guaranteed.
On Sunday morning there is a return race from Cane Garden Bay to Great Harbour, where a fashion show, BBQ and sushi feast is held at Foxy's restaurant. The Single Handed Race and the Log/Model Boat Race are held the following day, with prizes and awards distributed in the afternoo (close)
